+ Oh my Lord...WHAT AN ATTENTION-WHORE: Unable to choose between playing for the US and playing for the Dominican Republic, A-Rod will not play in the World Baseball Classic at all. Like he's the only person to have ever grown up torn between two cultures. "I am proud to be an American citizen and to have a Dominican legacy. My commitment to baseball is secondary to honoring my patriotic duties to my country and my ancestors," A-Rod said. Ugh. **stabs** "Honoring my patriotic duties"? What a loser. Honestly. He annoys me. Is he ever not politicking? Great example to set for your kid, Alex.

Speaking of, feel free to make a decision ANY DAY NOW, Hideki.

+ I think it unfailingly lame that the American government is trying to keep Cuba from fielding a team in the WBC.

+ Grudzie's NOT going to the Mets? What?

[Poll #634886]

+ Though according to this story, the Yankees feel they're out of the running for Nomar's services. So some of you can probably breathe a little easier.

+ For the record, [livejournal.com profile] rickenbacker, we're both of us in the business of losing friends and alienating people over this Oakland thing :-P From a conversation with [livejournal.com profile] cruzalicious yesterday: "Your A's and general baseball fangirling has been raging lately. It's like that store Claire's threw up in Champs Sports." HA.

+ BUT ON THE TOPIC OF THE A's... a request for those of you among the [livejournal.com profile] candle_beck faithful: I was realizing yesterday that I haven't read anything of Beck's since the tags her 'Zito/Harden trek to Canada' story. I could use recs from those of you familiar with her work. I'm not slave to any particular pairing; I have only these two criteria:

1. It have three parts or fewer - I'm not feeling up to anything epic.

2. It not carve my heart out with a spoon, stomp on it with size 11 spikes, and then pour lemon juice into the mix for good measure. You know what I mean. It's not that I can't do Beck's sadly beautiful endings, because I can, and I rather like them. But I'm really not in a place where I need to be reading any of her stuff where Fate Is Cruel and, like, Z wakes from feigned death only to find Mulder has killed himself. If you know what I mean. So, let's leave her grand tragedies off the short list, kay?
Evidence exam in the morning. My brain is mush. Remember sometime ago when it was all the rage to sort your favorite characters from different fandoms into Hogwarts Houses? And everywhere you went icons like:

and

were showing up?*

I remember also seeing BTVS characters and Trek characters sorted. Anyway, I am, as ever, easily distracted. With my brain cells slowly dying one by one, and my eyes about to wither and fall from their sockets, I find myself wondering...

Yes, there's a heavy East Coast and AL bias. What can I say? )

If I had listed A-Rod, is there anyone who wouldn't have automatically slotted him in Slytherin? I'm genuinely curious. I figured it was a waste of a poll option. **laughs** And now that I think about it - someone on my f-list had a friend with an icon marking A-Rod a Slytherin. It was an image of him slapping at Arroyo's glove, of course. **digs around** Ah --> [Bad username or site: aloha_moira / @ livejournal.com]'s the one.

*Both of these by [Bad username or site: foxglove_icons / @ livejournal.com].
The roommie introduced me to AOL radio, which is kind of a rocking thing, and a nice alternative to BBConline. I really like the variety of stations available. I was listening to the ambient station for a minute and then I saw one titled 'Melancholia' and had to scuttle over. "The Sounds of Indie Sadness" it says. Hee! Been listening to it since. Good stuff.

[Poll #629055]

[livejournal.com profile] johnnybvo posed the HMZ dilemma to me, and I suppose I'm still puzzling it out. Only not really, but I felt guilty that my immediate reaction was to slot Mulder for 'Kill', so I thought I'd at least make the appearance of giving it some thought :-P

Oh. Baseball Tonight. (For the record, I'd marry Harold Reynolds, fuck Ravech, and kill Kruk.)

HA - [livejournal.com profile] offspeed: The Pirates sent Redman to the ROYALS. (Not Boston. Happy?) Now you can write the Redman/Lima that's been keeping you up nights :-P
Had quite possibly the most unproductive break ever, aside from the fact that I think I have two shiny new fandoms to tide me over until baseball (btw, yes, Toronto IS on crack) and Deadwood return. Namely, Supernatural and Prison Break.

Supernatural - general reaction, vague spoilage for up to 1x09, spoiler for 1x10 )

========================================================================================

Prison Break - lots of fangirling, spoilers for 1x07 and 1x08, minor spoilage for the rest of the series up to those eps )

The more I watch of Prison Break, the more I want to see a Pitch Black prequel that features Vin Diesel's Riddick and a Wentworth Miller III character who's essentially a pre-Jack/Keira mini-Riddick, on the run together, dodging Johns and the law. Because that would be totally, totally badass. I mean, except for the part where Riddick was a total loner and it would be inconsisent with what we knew of him before the first film. But those are just details ^_~ Really, someone, anyone, needs to see their way to casting some action project that features both Vin Diesel and Wentworth Miller doing that scowly, intense growl thing they do so well. Because that would be hotness. Because they are hotness. Miscegenation, yay!

Speaking of, has anyone seen a picture of WM3's parents? I know, I'm completely classless, but I'm just so intrigued. His father either has to have the weakest dominant genes known to man, or Wentworth Miller II is also mixed. And inquiring minds want to know! Okay, fine, I want to know.

[livejournal.com profile] scornedsaint, if you have any Prison Break fic recs, I'd love to hear them. I think in this fandom, I'd be more inclined towards short pieces rather than long, gen more so than het (and I have pretty much no interest in slash in this fandom), and stuff set during or near the timeline of the show, and not so much backstory stuff. So if you can think of anything that would be cool ^_~

Also, a gold star to the person who tells me why the other inmates call Michael "Fish". I'm usually okay at puzzling out slang, I mean it's not rocket science, or Cockney or anything, but I can't quite figure it. I mean, assuming the reason isn't anything so simple as the fact that he's been freshly "netted", the catch of the day, as it were? Anyway, I refuse to google that shit.

Oh, and speaking of the talk, spent quite a while with my brother on the road, which means he controlled the radio, which means...I have a question.

[Poll #620898]

I suppose I should get ready to hit the road. **yawns** I totally managed to not see RENT this weekend. I'm such a bad fan.
Okay, so I was up last night, leaving three comments worth of feedback on something, which is so overeager it's kinda sad, but we're not really talking about me. I was up, and for once the signal for MTV U was coming in okay so I left it on. And the video came on for You're Beautiful by James Blunt. Um, have you guys seen this thing? Because....wtf? (You can check out the video here)

[Poll #616603]

Yeah. I dunno. I remember hearing the song on the BBC countdown and thinking it was alright, but that video's a little special. CHILL OUT DUDE. You didn't even know her. And I note with nervous laughter that in the album version of that song, it's not I was flying high, it's I was fucking high. **backs away slowly**

Maybe it's just me. It took me ages to get over the creep factor of Savage Garden's I Knew I Loved You. I still find Boyz II Men's Thank You In Advance totally off-putting. Just...bring it down a notch, guys.

Ended up flipping the station and very randomly coming across the end of an ep of Supernatural. It was like...three in the morning? Weirdness. Anyway, I dropped in just in time to catch Loretta Divine matter-of-factly intoning "Your mother's spirit and the poltergeist's energy canceled each other out." Um, okay. First off, what is Loretta Divine doing on this show? I kept watching long enough to totally spoil myself on what I imagine is a big plot development, at least if I'm remembering the early stuff I heard about the show's premise correctly. On the other hand, it made me want to get a move on with checking out this show so I think I'm gonna load up the pilot in a few minutes. And maybe do up a couple eps if I can take it, because I have been scouring page proofs for the past 5 hours and my brain hurts.

Stuff I heard on MTV U last night that I ended up downloading )

It's November.

I'm drinking eggnog.

It's 8pm.

AND IT'S STILL LIKE 80 DEGREES OUTSIDE.

Someone please explain to me why it's so hot in my dorm room. Honestly. I had to break out my fan.

just a bit of silliness, really )

My parents called. My mother declared I can never go downtown again, because the son of my dad's boss was just murdered in the city :-/ But seeing as downtown is where the ballpark is, and no one gets shot coming into or leaving Camden Yards, I think she's gonna have to budge on that.

My dad, meanwhile, was all "Ninety days to spring training!" Poser. This is the same guy who started marking off the days until the start of Training Camp the second the Orioles stumbled after the All Star Break.

(Also, if you gave me your address, you may see more postcards from me. Try not to be alarmed. I'm thinking about getting rid of all the cards I have on my walls right now and decorating with new ones when we come back from Winter Break.)

ETA:
Okay, and now it's pouring rain and the temperature has dropped like 20 degrees. Awesome. I am no longer cranky, but I like this shot of Jack Davenport, so he can stay.

The Lab has re-introduced Three Witches, which completely blows me away. I can pretty much sell off the rest of my BPAL now, because I've always felt that if Three Witches came back, that's all I'd ever wear. So, so awesome.

Oh, [livejournal.com profile] phantom_hpuff and [livejournal.com profile] scornedsaint: I finally sent out your postcards! And I bought stamps while I was at the PO - the Bailamos collection? I love them, they're so...happy and colorful. (As Ash would say, We're happy and we're singing and we're colored!) I want to send people random mail, for the express purpose of using these stamps :-P

Stressed, stressed, and stressed some more. But have a good day, everyone!
[Poll #612091]

Egg Nog. Mmmmm. Watched Boondocks last night. Out of control. Superhero Action!Cornel West? White men and Lemon Pledge? Adam West as R. Kelly's attorney? Had me rolling. "Do you know what this is? This is an NAACP Image Award nomination. Do you think they give these to just anybody?" (Random voice from the back of the courtroom: "I got one!")

This show will not last, people. There is no way.
Listening to the Walk The Line soundtrack and Joaquin doesn't sound half bad. I'm finding Reese's voice/accent a little grating, but I have no idea what June Carter Cash sounded like IRL, so she might be spot on with that for all I know.

Johnny Cash - Ring of Fire

Joaquin Phoenix - Ring of Fire (WTL soundtrack)

So, I realize this movie doesn't quite have the Gay Cowboy quotient of others we're anticipating this fall, but who else is planning to see Walk The Line? I'm not a huge Cash fan, but trailers have looked pretty good. And by "looked pretty good" I mean "contained a lot of shots of Joaquin being all Brown Eyes McBroodsalot."

[Poll #609050]
[Poll #602792]

Ugh, how is it not even noon?
1. This image of Zito like, amuses the hell out of me. I think it's the expression on his face.

2. It rained all day today and I got wet, and now I have this low, throbbing headache. And I haven't changed my clothes so I'm still wet. And for some reason, TPTB decided they'd given us heat too early, and put the AC back on. Wtf.

3. I hear tell Moose slash has been written. I'm being SO good. **taps fingers on desk top** Is it November yet?

4. I got to try the pumpkin patch with sandalwood and orris and omg, wow. Yumtastic. Quite eager for that order to arrive now ^_^ Also, Antique Lace is back, and I don't know how I feel about that. I mean, I guess I'm excited to try it, since a lot of people said Buck Moon reminded them of it, and I love Buck Moon. But I had gotten used to the idea of Antique Lace as that one unattainable bpal oil, you know? It had reached, like, mythic proportions. What if I try it now and I think it sucks?

5. I just realized the guy in the video for We Belong Together and the guy from Prison Break (as seen in the commercials that have been running every 4 minutes during the baseball playoffs)? Same dude. Now I know why he looked so damn familiar. That was bugging the everloving shit out of me.

6. There's no baseball on tv tonight. I am sorely tempted to pull my 2003 ALDS tapes out of my closet and watch the Zito/Martinez game now that, you know, the Oakland A's have become something other than That Team Whose Job It Is To Lose To Boston Or New York In The ALDS. I'm all nostalgic and shit for the early '00 A's. If I'd ended up in Palo Alto for undergrad, they could have been my team. How weird is that? I'd be all into the A's/Angels and I'd probably be one of those people who rolls their eyes when the media get going about Red Sox/Yankees, instead of a loser who plots out the pitching matchups and tapes all of the games and knows all the time cues on every time Jeter's been HBP at Fenway :-P It'd be so weird. I'd know stuff about like, Eric Chavez instead. I'd probably be able to name guys in the A's bullpen, even. Like pre-Huston Street. Weird.

[Poll #597504]
Congrats to the NL Champion Houston Astros! I'm glad I came over to Christine's for the game, we had a fun time, and she saw my awesome homerun calling power in action. (I totally called Lane's homerun, kids. PHEER ME.)

I do feel bad for Mulder, that's three elimination games now he's started for his ballclub only to watch the other team celebrate at the end of the night. And I'm sorry, [livejournal.com profile] rickenbacker and [livejournal.com profile] starfishchick. I know you guys never lost faith in your boys.

But at the end of the night, I'm pretty excited about the Astros/White Sox matchup. But who to root for now? The club that hasn't won since 1917...or the club that's never won one? I usually vote for AL over NL, just 'cause you gotta have league pride, but Oswalt! and Everett! and Ensberg! Yeah. I dunno.

[livejournal.com profile] sensefille says Chicago in six. [Bad username or site: __dtrain / @ livejournal.com] says 'stros in six. ([Bad username or site: cruzalicious / @ livejournal.com] also calls 'stros in six. All the ESPN guys are giving it to Chicago.) I don't think I lose either way; I'd be happy for either club :-P

Leo Mazzone is our new pitching coach? Okay then. That works for me ^_^

Edit 3:
They keep showing the phantom tag. I probably would not find it so damn amusing if it had cost the Astros a scoring opportunity.
Poured a bowl of Cocoa Puffs for breakfast, and then bitched about how there was something off about it, doubled checked the expiration date, and since it's not April of 2006 (HA), I declared it needed more sugar. My dad: "Awww. Is your cereal not sweet enough for you? Everything's gonna taste wrong today. 'cause your Yankees lost. Good thing they left Mussina in California, just in case."

And then I stabbed my father in the face. (Okay, not really. And it wasn't because of the Yankees. I suspect I got a mispackaged label of Cocoa Puffs, cause I know they make that other, crappy kind, that has 75% less sugar or something ridiculous like that.)

As for last night, you know, I had a feeling. All the talking heads had been picking Mussina over Colon all day. When Colon went down on the mound, grimacing, and Erstad put his arm on his shoulder, and they called for the rookie, I had a feeling. Baseball is such a sport for stories, and how could you not see the story developing? Colon tries to gut it out, he wanted so badly to be able to do this for his team, and he cannot. So they call on the kid on short notice, and Santana holds off the Yankees and the Angels advance. For such an unpredictable sport, sometimes these games feel damn near scripted :-P

I am, as I always get this time of year, a little torn. Part of me feels badly for Moose, five years into a six year contract, and not a ring to his name, and damn it, wasn't that why he left us?

And then there's the other part of me, who finds that hilarious, and really, that's exactly what you get, abandoning a city that worships you, for New York, a team we agreed we hated, and the Bronx, and remember, you always said the only thing good about the Bronx is that Bugs Bunny cartoon they show before each game, remember that? You will never win a ring there, and they haven't won since you signed with them, and you know what the kids call that, Michael Cole? It's called KARMA.

So, while I kinda want to mock him with my monkeypants, he's still my boy enough that I don't dare check the NY sports pages today, which are no doubt filled with copy about Mussina not showing up when they needed him. Though they should be filled with copy on BUBBA CROSBY AND HOW MUCH HE BLOWS, and really, my boy wouldn't have even been in this situation if a certain "gold glove third baseman" knew how to field routine pop-ups, because this series wouldn't have had to go to 5. So, suck, suck, suck. And in conclusion, step off Moose, NY writers, that whole team failed to get it done, and he's been fighting that elbow since last year.

But I digress:

[Poll #587956]

Back to the 'burg later today. Joy. On the plus side, someone just PM'd me about a bottle of Hamadryad. Yay!

ETA: [Bad username or site: sensefille / @ livejournal.com], I know you guys expect better, but really, you've got to be proud of how they battled this year, no? There was a point there were you guys were literally pulling rabbits out of hats to plug into your rotation, and there were holes all over your field, and to just now be calling your season over is a bit remarkable, I think. Steinbrenner's gloom and doom pronouncements to the contrary aside.
Heh, I totally dozed off on the Yanks trying to stave off elimination. I woke up and the first thing my dad had for me was a disgusted "Yeah, yeah, your Yankees won." My Yankees? :-P I'm sure I don't know what he could mean. I only root for one of them and that's only every fifth day. I swear. **coughs** Anyhoo, Moose gets the start tonight - oh, the drama. I'm think I'm gonna stay away. Probably go see Serenity so as to preserve my sanity and what's left of my fingernails. (Or not. Okay, will come up with plan B.)

The White Sox must be loooooooving this. They've been what? Getting massages for the past three days?

[livejournal.com profile] rickenbacker reminded me that I'd put these together, and I figured I'd share. Quasi-soundtracks for two of my favorite [livejournal.com profile] candle_beck stories: Undercurrent and Eric Chavez Goes To Hollywood. I haven't uploaded the songs individually because I'm a lazy cow. ( As well you know /Izzard voice) The zips are about 80mbs each.

B. Eric Chavez Goes To Hollywood - collection of music inspired by her Chavez/Zito, by way of Zito/Hudson and Chavez/Mulder, saga:

The jackhammering outside the basement lab is driving me insane.

Edited to add: The LJ Interests Meme because pre-emption checking is boring )
I know I've been posting polls like they just discovered the technology yesterday. I don't know why, but I think I'll blame Jeff. I didn't used to care what you guys thought about stuff ^_~ The LJ peeve results were interesting. Only two people referenced lj-cuts (one anti cuts, the other pro :-P), WORD on the pointlessness of telling me where you've crossposted something (even though I've done that; I've never known why I was doing it, I'm just a lemming), and on the obnoxiousness of people pretending they don't know if a post is okay or not when they know it isn't and telling the mods they can delete it if they want. And yes, for the love of God people, would it kill you to put margin stretching memes behind a cut? I had quite a few peeves in common with other people, which made me feel a little better about myself...but my big three or so peeves didn't make a showing, so I guess I am kind of petty and anal ^_~ But [Bad username or site: jchalo / @ livejournal.com], I'm so sorry! Or maybe bad things keep happening to me because I'm paying off karma for finding things like this really amusing )

Other news:

+ The most emailed story on the Baltimore Sun's website right now is the fluff piece on Brad and Angie's visit to the Aquarium on Sunday. I find it adorable beyond measure that the Aquarium director referred to Maddox as Brad's son.

+ Julio blows our sweep, I crack my laptop screen, the Dean emails out our Fall exam codes, and other unpleasant things continue to happen this week.

+ But the GOF trailer is out today. It looks amazing.

+ I am way too invested in Lacey/Nolan for someone who just found out about it like...yesterday.

Curt Schilling seems to be the popular vote-getter, but seriously people, it's Brian Michael 'If I Could Meet Any Person Living Or Dead It Would Be Jesus' Roberts. Because that would be awesome. See how just the suggestion adds about ten more shades to his otherwise boring as white bread personality? :-P

+ "It is good to have friends, is it not, Mr. Garibaldi? Even if, maybe, only for a little while?"
"Even if only for a little while."

Last but certainly not least...a huge and heartfelt happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] sensefille. If you've read/seen Take Me Out: do you think Kippy and Darren ever talked again after everything was said and done?

I was re-reading it last week, and I don't know. Get the feeling it's the kind of thing that changes depending on the mood you're in when you read the text, or the chemistry and inflection of the actors that particular night. It makes me sad to think they never spoke again, but more often than not, that's the feeling I come away with.
