Not sure how I missed it, but The Oakland Tribune has up two A's slideshows from Spring Training to date. One is a Photo Day slideshow, the other is a general ST slideshow. I've clipped some of the images and added them here. (The new pics start on the 3rd row of the first page, with Adam.) It's so nice to have a bunch of pics from the camp!

Admittedly, the options presented in the below poll are but a fraction of the different looks we've seen from both guys. But: pointless pollage for ppl who pay any mind to the a's )

+ Randomly came across the STL Post-Dispatch wondering What's wrong with '24'? Glad to have even more reassurance that I'm not missing anything.

+ I got an email from the Death Cab fanclub folks that Ben Gibbard is going on a solo tour in May (OMFGYAY!), and that presale tickets go on sale on Monday (WHOO). But that's it! No word on locations, AT ALL. What the hell? Why make people spend the next four days all excited about the possibility of seeing Ben, only to find out come Monday that he's not playing anywhere near them? That's like the Daily Double of obnoxious.

+ Things I Don't Get: Revocable trusts as a will substitute, for one, and for two, why the British government is releasing so much information on deployment plans for Prince Harry. How does that do anything but make him a target for insurgents? I've heard Basra, a tank regiment, and May or June. Even if it's false information, doesn't that just put other British soldiers at risk? Boggles my mind.

+ Albert Pujols shaved his head, but it's about 2 years too late to stop people wondering about his age.

+ There's this article on MLB.com and Zimmer's all "BACK OFF JETER, PEOPLE" and it made me laugh. Zim, you aren't even on the Yankees payroll anymore, shut up. I cackle with glee that there's a sense that Jeter's being made out to be the villain in the story of why DJ and A-Rod don't heart each other anymore.

Okay, back to work >.>

[T]he A's are a different kind of club, as Beane noted hilariously when I asked him about the new delivery Barry Zito revealed Thursday to the stunned Giants brass.

"We'd have no problem with Barry doing that -- we're Montessori over here," Beane said, laughing. "We let you try anything you want."
- One Thing's Clear.

Hee. Billy cracks me up.

Random A's clippage: Kendall gets bored when he doesn't start. // Really, really bored.

So are the Cubs and Zambrano going to arbitration or what? I am confuzzled.

I think I need a new flavor of tea. I've been rotating between the same three (two blacks, and a red) for a couple of months now, and I'm bored. Any recs?

On the TV watching front: I forgot I had eps of Rome and Dexter downloaded! I also grabbed the first three of FNL, again. So, sorry, 24. We're still not happening this year. I was thinking - I didn't watch the third season of 24 either, and then I came back for the 4th and 5th seasons. So maybe I just need a little alone time and we'll be fine next year.

eta: I've been reading Interpreter of Maladies, which is a collection of short stories by Jhumpa Lahiri (The Namesake). I like her storytelling soooo much better in this format, these extended vignettes. I would recommend it wholeheartedly over The Namesake.

edit 2: [Bad username or site: phantom_hpuff / @ livejournal.com] linked me to this SI gallery of "Reunions We'd Like To See." Even beyond The Big Three, it's pretty much a gallery of awwwwwwwww and lol from start to finish. Except for Loria/Girardi, because :'( And isn't it really too soon to miss Pettitte/Clemens? They were just playing together in Houston.
ayrdaomei: ([Foster's] What? I'm just saying.)
( Feb. 19th, 2007 12:16 pm)
I've decided BSG and I are undergoing another temporary separation. When the show started to get to me last season, I'd stop watching for a month or so at a time and then catch up, and it's just easier than tuning in week after week and being left disappointed/irritated/crotchety.

That being the case, I have a free hour for a drama again, so I'm thinking of catching back up with 24, which I haven't watched since the season premiere. I think there are a couple of you still watching - how is it so far? Good? Or has Day 6 been ridiculous and not in a fun way?

Mulder traces troubles to '04 season with A's. Well, sorry, Billy. I tried to talk [Bad username or site: rickenbacker / @ livejournal.com] out of killing you, but then Mark went and opened his mouth. I try not to pay too much attention to the words that come out of that boy, because he strikes me as one for self-delusion. And I'm not just saying that because he married a woman. I hardly know what to make of any of his recent comments about his pitching problems. I'm not really sure why this is coming up again after the Cards have insisted Mark wasn't "damaged goods" when they traded for him.

Brandon and Lidge crack me up.

Also, Freddi Gonzalez kinda looks like Garth Brooks with the facial hair, and it's freaking me out. Nice try, guys, but I'm still not rooting for you this year.

eta: Among the players sporting new looks at the start of camp is right-hander Dan Haren, wearing a thick beard. Closer Huston Street arrived with long, thick sideburns that immediately got him a razzing from general manager Billy Beane. - It amuses me that the Cali papers find this kind of stuff merits a mention.
1. Starting right-hander Dan Haren has switched from No. 24 to 15.

JACKASS. Though I bet you anything Billy had something to do with that. I bet he was like, hey Dan, 75 would look great on you. And Dan was like, I dunno, that's kinda weird, dude. SECOND OF ALL, I already own TWO HAREN SHIRTS WITH 24 ON THEM.

Jackass.

We are so over. For the fifth time.

2. Barry Zito wandered into his new spring training clubhouse carrying an Oakland Athletics duffel bag and plopped into Barry Bonds' chair. - First Day

3. The more radical elements of Barry Zito's new delivery appear headed for the dustbin after he and pitching coach Dave Righetti had a long chat Friday. Asked afterward if Zito will revert to something closer to his Oakland motion the next time he throws, Righetti said, "Probably." - A change of heart? Zito may use old style. Snerk. Listen, kid. We're not paying you $126 million to "express yourself" and "try new things."

There's a piece at the bottom of that page about Lowry being weirded out when someone created a Myspace page in his name and used it to rip Jason Schmidt. Oh, Noah. You don't even know the half of things people do in your name on ye olde internets. Don't be so quick to turn that color.

Drove down from MD today and on the radio TPTB were playing excerpts from several different MLK speeches. That was really something to listen to. There was one speech in particular, where he talked about death threats being leveled against his family during the bus boycotts and how he despaired. He recalled praying, one sleepless night over a cup of coffee in his kitchen, for God (well, Jesus) to give him strength to carry on. It was very moving. I hadn't heard that speech before, or many of the others that were played.

Speaking of faith and things that give us strength, and with no disrespect intended, I feel it should be noted that the first few batches of pitchers and catchers will be reporting to ST in exactly one month and counting.

I have decided I will make a 'To Read' pile of about 4-5 leisure books for this semester. Wish me luck.

(Bri came. It was great. I cannot find the USB cord for my camera, so you, and she, are all spared pics. And video of her laughing at Joel Zumaya's inability to field, like the meanie that she is.)
+ This article on the outlook for the Marlins this year is so depressing! Could the Marlins be one of the worst teams in modern baseball history? Professional handicapper Andy Iskoe certainly thinks so. “They may not win 50 games,” he says. “They are going to be a horrible team this year.” Aww. **roots for them** Heh, finally. A team I can't really jinx.

+ So managers are dropping out of the WBC now? o.O

+ I was all "whine, whine, whine, stop taking pics of Pettitte!" And the AP was like "Okay." **proceed to take 300 pics of Bagwell** Bastards. Speaking of, he's lost weight too, yeah?

+ What nationality is reflected in this alphabetic soup?

"Polish," Mientkiewicz said. "And I'm a little upset that this World Baseball Classic doesn't have a Polish team."

By any name, these new Royals are counted upon to seal up the right side of the infield.

"For at least six months," Mientkiewicz said.
-- Grud, Mientkiewicz spell defense in KC. LOL. Stop making me laugh, Douglas.

+ Hello, Stranger. Can't decide if I'm kinda rooting for Scotty to make the team or what. I do kinda miss the old "Scott Erickson was on the mound last night.... He also pitched" cracks. Cause I'm 12.

Finally: Grudzie! Mike Jacobs! MC Hammer! Wait, what? )

Um, in the words of Ariel - What do you suppose....?

**yawns** Journal symposium today. I just wanna sleep, ma!
'Cause I'd like another Turtle Nut Latte and I don't feel like driving.

Dear Bret Boone,

Just say no.

Love,
the world

PS - I am still pulling for you, though. God awful hair and all.

In other less distressing ex-Mariners news, Mike Cameron is a huge dork. Or he has a crush on AP photographer Elaine Thompson, I'm not sure which.

Camera dude, sure it's a neat artsy shot, BUT HONESTLY. In the future, please take pictures of Scotty's sexy body and not his shadow. Thanks.

Question: Have the captions of photos in the Yahoo gallery always indicated the national origin of non-American players? Because I don't know if it's something they've just started doing, or I'm just noticing it now because of all the WBC hullabaloo.

Hey, it's Doug. All blurry and in the background, but Doug. Just...saying. Grudzie is nowhere to be seen.

Also, I'd like to note point out that it's after 3pm out in Arizona on the day that position players reported for Oakland, and I haven't seen a single pic out of that camp since Sunday. Wtf.
Can we go back to the trademark stuff? I kinda got the trademark stuff.

[Bad username or site: cruzalicious / @ livejournal.com], the Martina Topley-Bird import finally arrived! I like it. Her songs don't make much sense to me, but I like it ^_~ It's neatly moody and atmospheric. I'll YSI/SS it to you later.

random handful of pics )

Hey, [Bad username or site: rickenbacker / @ livejournal.com]: It's your fourth husband.
These will probably all show up in the Yahoo gallery in the next hour or so, but what the hell.

I was gonna write a non-baseball post. I was gonna talk about the Kem concert, and 5 dead shows I'd bring back if I could (Sports Night, Space: Above And Beyond, Keen Eddie, High Incident and Strange Luck), 'cause [Bad username or site: bellanut / @ livejournal.com] brought it up and everyone and their mother said Firefly and I wanted to be like PEOPLE. THERE WERE DOOMED SHOWS BEFORE JOSS WHEDON. I was gonna talk about the impending visits by Bird York and Jenny Lewis to the Morning Becomes Eclectic studio, and the fact that She Wants Revenge, Duncan Sheik, and Of Montreal were all on the show in the past month, which is pretty cool because I saw Of Montreal last year, Duncan Sheik is performing at the Kimball on Thursday and She Wants Revenge will be at the Norva in April. Yeah, I was gonna talk about all that stuff.

But then the AP got with the program. Finally.

All the pics are from today, except for that first pic of Munson, which I somehow missed on Friday, despite checking the archive about 800 times.

Mostly Astros and Athletics )

ETA: Huddy's not dead, there just haven't been any good pics of him so far. The AP photographer assigned to the Braves is apparently in love with Smoltz or something. But you can see Timmy in the background of this 2/17 shot, as bored by Smoltz as I am.
There are pics of Damon reporting to Yanks camp circulating, but no one cares, right? Right.

Athletics and Indians - just a handful, because the AP seem to think everyone's much more eager to see images of the Padres and the Royals. There's also a pic of Not!Javy, just 'cause. )

Danny Haren is one pale motherfucker. Isn't he from California? Where the sun is?

Random Padres pic, because 1.) Mirabelli's in it, and 2.) there's a dog in it, and [Bad username or site: rickenbacker / @ livejournal.com] is all about analyzing dogs.

I find this pic of Greg Maddux rather disturbing.

Pic of David here, tongue in tow. I'm not sure why the caption says this is David's first workout of the year when he showed up to the Mets' mini-camp last month and worked out yesterday as well. I need to stop reading captions.

Also, I would appreciate it if a memo went out to everyone that they wear shorts, until such a time as I get tired of it.

[Bad username or site: soupypictures / @ livejournal.com], if you're interested: a bunch of Thierry Amiel downloads (here) - songs and three videos.

World Champion Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen listens to a question at the Sox spring training facility in Tucson, Ariz., Friday, Feb. 17, 2006. Guillen apologized for comments he made about Alex Rodriguez in a Sports Illustrated article. (AP Photo/Charles Rex Arbogast))

There aren't any stories on the wire yet, so I don't know what he said in his apology*. He's still an asshole. Btw, I presume he also apologized for being a hateful bastard to Nomar.

There are all these scary pictures of Matt Morris and Sidney Ponson on the internets.

*ETA From SI.com: "I learned a lesson. I never took a first shot at anybody in my life and now I feel like I took the first shot. I feel embarrassed, I feel guilty. I wish I had not said it the way it sounds or the way I said it. . . . I apologize to Alex Rodriguez, his family, his fans, the New York Yankee organization, to the White Sox organization. That's the first time I feel like I did something wrong. I've been in a lot of controversial things before, but I think I started this one and I'm going to finish it."

I guess that's that.

Oh, and Cards pics - For [Bad username or site: rickenbacker / @ livejournal.com] and [Bad username or site: phantom_hpuff / @ livejournal.com]. Well, the one pic of Lurch Looper doing stretches next to Mulder is for Leanne.

Cards )
I just heard from [Bad username or site: johnnybvo / @ livejournal.com] that Andreas Katsulas (most notably B5's Ambassador G'Kar, though I'm sure far too many people know him better as the One Armed Man from The Fugitive) died earlier this week. I'm feeling pretty shitty about the fact that he died 4 days ago and I just found out about it. He was a tremendous talent - he took JMS's words and breathed life into one of the most fascinating fictional characters ever, IMHO. He was an integral part of why I will always consider Babylon 5 one of the best stories ever told. God rest him. I'm deeply grateful for the body of work he left us to remember him by.

Alright, the Ozzie Guillen thing is still pissing me off. And Yahoo's mlb gallery is a full SEVEN pages behind the Accuweather AP archive. So. mini spring training picspam of stuff that isn't on Yahoo yet.

Tigers, Cubs, Moose, Mets, Phillies, Orioles, Rangers, Mariners and Eddie Guardado's ass. Oh my. )

Okay, technically that Moose pic is in the Yahoo gallery, but it's my picspam, damn it.

Every time I see Kerry Wood, I think "that dude looks like a cat." Every time. Also, he loses points for letting himself be photographed AFTER practice and not during. Loser. There are a couple pics of Prior in uniform in the yahoo gallery; here's one of him at the post-practice press conference.

Um, there were also pics of the Giants and more pics of the White Sox (well, Thome and Brandon McCarthy) but there are now enough pics of teams I actually care about that I don't have give them face time. SO THERE. (Okay, I did add a pic of Omar Vizquel. Cause I still crush on him.)

1. For the Explosions In The Sky fans on my f-list: Three albums available for download in one zip (here).

2. I haven't been commenting much lately, I realize. I'm getting as behind with my f-list as I am with everything else. Which is all by way of saying I'm probably due for another f-list cut. I don't know why I feel compelled to announce these things. Maybe because I like to give people the option of defriending me first; I'm not sure. Anyway, there it is. I'll probably do that in a couple weeks, after my appellate brief and my note draft have been turned in. Or maybe it would make more sense if I did it before? Whatever. My brain's not really working.

3. On page 402 of my used Intellectual Property book, someone has written in curvy blue script "Bowtie" and a few inches over someone else has written in black print, "Must be Muslim". Random much? Did we lock up the monopoly on bowties? ^_~ I so wanna know the context of that exchange.

4. [Bad username or site: johnnybvo / @ livejournal.com]: Every year, even if it's O's-less this go round (we'll see if that lasts), your enthusiasm for the game in spring is nearly infectious. Nearly.

Ahahaha. That's a nice way of telling me I'm annoying, isn't it? Yes, it is.

Any White Sox or Rockies fans on ye olde f-list? The first few pics of pitchers from both teams working out have hit the AP wire. Jon Garland say hi from Feb 15, 2007 (that's what the caption says!) and the Kims say hi too, but just from regular old 2006 :-P

I emailed Mark Newman to tell him how much I enjoyed his piece on the opening of camps and he emailed me back - 16 minutes later. Dude, DO SOME WORK. **laughs** You're supposed to be a professional.

Okay, taking my own advice now.
Guess who spent their Valentine's Day getting an early start on Spring Training?

omgwtf-facialhair! )

[Bad username or site: owllover711 / @ livejournal.com], BREATHE. It's just in the interest of equal time :-P I swear.

[Bad username or site: kmousie / @ livejournal.com], it might amuse you to know I was poking around for pics of Brad and came across this. According to the captions, that gentleman in the red hoodie is Brad Ausmus ^_~ At any rate, considering how long he's been playing, the pickings were a little slim on pics of your boy, but I'll do what I can when I get another chance to sit down with photoshop for a while.

MLB.com has the Orioles pitchers and catchers reporting today, for workouts starting tomorrow. Huh. Works for me.

And randomly, what is the deal with those Sweetheart candies? As long as those things have been around, you'd think the makers would have nailed getting rid of that nasty ass aftertaste by now. I mean, are you NOT supposed to eat them?

ETA: It is absolutely gorgeous outside today. Bit of a breeze but it's not too cold and there isn't a cloud in the sky for once. Man, forget winning - just the promise of baseball makes the trees greener and the girls prettier ^_~
