First off - Bri swears it wasn't her, so many thanks to the kind soul who gifted me additional paid time. I originally had gifted paid time through March (which I feel like I've wasted by only posting twice, but posting aside, it gave me the chance to futz with some potential new layouts), so whoever you are, I hope you like baseball, cause I now have paid time through the first two months of the baseball season ;) While I'm not yet feeling bitten by the MLB bug, odds are you'll be drowning in pointless polls and constant updates by next month ;)

Music: I've been really digging Our December by Thriving Ivory, a free Amazon mp3 I downloaded last fall and have just given a listen. I like the song so much I went and bought their major label debut which is currently at the top of Billboard's Heatseekers chart and only $7.99 at Best Buy. Of course, Our December isn't on their major label debut, and I don't like any song on there near as much. Let this be a lesson to you, kids. Never pay for music until you've scouted it out for free, first. I'm sure the cd will grow on me, with time. I like the band's sound, it's just that lyrics-wise, the major label debut is kinda boring.

And on the topic of new music - you can stream new Death Cab tracks over at Stereogum. I don't like Little Bribes or A Diamond and A Tether much...My Mirror Speaks and Once I Was A Loyal Lover are fun times, though!

To the generous soul who recently gifted me some paid time: thanks :) I don't know when I'll get around to it, but I'm looking forward to doing an overhaul of my layout.

While I wasn't looking, the Republicans named Michael Steele (former MD Lt. Gov.) as the chair of their National Committee. Steele is the first African American elected to that position. And last month Colorado saw the only two African American members of its General Assembly sworn in as the heads of both chambers. Which - you guessed it - makes them the first African Americans to head both chambers of a state legislature...ever. So, that's different. (One day stuff like this will happen and it won't be newsworthy, but today is not that day.)

Talking about this James Richard thing with [livejournal.com profile] 3olives via email, and in the course of our exchange, she mentions the surreality of the sight of Harden in their dugout, and I say something like "Mercifully, we've avoided any images of Harden in Cubs blue to this point".

She, of course, promptly responds by digging me up A PICTURE of Harden in the aforesaid godforsaken blue, attaching it to her reply, and links me to a video interview.

My F-list: just so helpful and willing to serve. Thanks. Thanks EVER SO ;)

+ The title of the last Harry Potter book is just so very...what? I can't stop laughing. (thanks to [Bad username or site: tinkelo / @ livejournal.com] for the heads up).

+ God, this column tickles all my Zito buttons: Zito's slip is showing. The New York media, doing their part to make sure Barry knows he's not as eminently shaggable as he thinks he is.

December 20, 2006 -- There is doubt steeped all over Barry Zito's situation. Primarily, it is doubt about whether he would take less money in New York or more money in Texas.

But there also is doubt about the pitcher himself: Whether he's already slipping, whether he's worth a six-year contract and whether the Mets would be making the right move in signing him.

As Met officials huddled with Zito and agent Scott Boras yesterday in greater Los Angeles, baseball sources were finishing a portrait of Zito, a 2002 Cy Young Award winner, as anything but a sure thing.

"I don't know if he cuts it in New York," one insider who knows Zito flatly told The Post.

lololololz. Oh, Mychael Urban. Please keep feeding quotes to the NY rags.

.... "I think he's slipped," one major-league scout told The Post. "The last two times I've seen him the last couple years, he wasn't on at all. He struggled getting his breaking ball over for strikes, and when he does that, he's in trouble. He can't get by on a power arm."

The scout allowed that Zito might not be slipping, per se, but at the very least he's getting by with less exertion, getting by because he knows how to pitch. And that could be the cumulative effect of his workload.

Ah. Fun times. Since Barry doesn't read the papers, hopefully Danny called him up and read the choice bits into his voice mail. Thanks [Bad username or site: phantom_hpuff / @ livejournal.com], I so needed that.

+ I came home to 4 holiday cards, though I didn't respond to a single "give me your addy if you want a card" post I've seen to date. My f-list is kinda awesome ^_^

(I had to blow the dust off trusty old Semagic. Because. Just. LJ needs to not debut modifications during exams period, maybe. Or during the holiday season when people are already like suicidal and nerves are on edge and shit. Debut stuff on January 1st! And people will be all hey, cool stuff for the new year. Or something. But I'm no marketing major.)

But moving on! Aimee Mann was on Conan last night! [Bad username or site: rickenbacker / @ livejournal.com] isn't familiar with her stuff, so I uploaded just a few of my favorites as a sampler: (24mb, zip). Five songs: Video (KCRW performance), That's How I Knew This Story Would Break My Heart, Little Bombs, That's Just What You Are, The Scientist (live Coldplay cover). Yes, The Forgotten Arm is my favorite Aimee album :P And I feel like I should say Wise Up is not included in that five favorites only because I've already sent it to her in cd form.

Seeing Aimee reminded me she had that Christmas cd out, so I checked to see if she was touring in support of it. And she is! And she's gonna be in Virginia for two shows next week! But tickets are pricey...too steep for a Christmas show. Good for her though; I didn't realize she was big enough to charge real money ^_~

Anyone else find it interesting, and pretty gutsy, that Mark Mulder wants a one-year contract so he can increase his value and hit the free-agent market again next year?

You'd think a guy who's such a health question would welcome a multi-year deal, but he doesn't lack confidence.

lol. Such a health question. Amused, and I can sorta see his point, if I squint, but I don't think it's terribly surprising. I mean, when I was trying to talk Bri off the ledge earlier in the year, we always said well, he'll just have to play on the cheap next year and show he's healthy and do the free agent dance next off-season. It doesn't really make sense for him to take a crap multiyear offer from anyone - did I miss something? Did the Orioles guarantee him 11 million a year for the next 3 years or something? If he's turning down something like that, then maybe, yeah, you say, the guy's got balls. He could be another Pavano for all he knows. Best to take that kind of money and run. But what can teams possibly be offering him, even long term, when they can't know how he'll come back from surgery? It's no different than what Nomar did, or what Big Frank did, just this past year.

[Bad username or site: rickenbacker / @ livejournal.com] texted me a little while ago that she was in St. Louis and managed to find somewhere to park her car for $10. I hope she can remember where she left it.

It's gonna be a looooong night XD
If anyone would be up for making me a desktop, I'd very much appreciate it. I love my cookie!Zito wallpaper, but it's officially at the point in the year where it's only gonna make me sad. So, if you're inclined to, hook me up. 1280 x 800. I was trying to make a new one for myself, but I just...I'm in the mood for something completely unexpected. My only request is that it not be baseball-related. And if more than one of you wants to help me out, I'll blow the dust off my old wallpaper changer program ^_^ It doesn't necessarily have to be fandomy or anything. Surprise me? ^_^

Speaking of incarnations of Barry - Zito is keeping a blog for the playoffs. Which, you know, is even more reason for the A's not to go three and out please, kay? thanks. Created another no doubt quirky syndicated feed: [Bad username or site: zito_mlblog / @ livejournal.com]. Thanks to [Bad username or site: cookie2697 / @ livejournal.com] for the heads up.

Notice I didn't say anything about Huston blowing the save last game of the season. I am being SO GOOD.

[Bad username or site: owllover711 / @ livejournal.com] linked to this, which makes me all too happy to ignore Sunday's bombshell: San Francisco U.S. Attorney Kevin Ryan issued a statement Monday, saying: "In view of the recent news reports purporting to identify certain athletes whose names had been redacted from the government's search warrant filings in the Grimsley matter, and in the interests of justice, please be advised that these reports contain significant inaccuracies."

Sounds good to me.

[Bad username or site: oakchick75 / @ livejournal.com], she who is ever vigilant, found FSN Bay Area footage of the A's celebration from last Tuesday on Youtube:
Part I of III - stream // download.
Part II of III - stream // download.
Part III of III - stream // download.

zip of the MPGs // zip of the FLVs from YouTube. The FLVs have the best picture quality; the videos lose a little in the conversion to mpg.

...And I feel like that is a pretty jinxy thing to do, posting old celebration footage right before they play Game 1 of the postseason. I'ma go outside and turn around three times and the whole shebang.

But before I do! I couldn't resist - taking a page from [Bad username or site: rickenbacker / @ livejournal.com]'s book:

Dan hits his 27th homerun, with the remainder of the sixth inning because they show him in the dugout a bunch and everyone loves him - wmv, 22mbs
Dan gets a curtain call! - asf, 1mb
Rich (or is it Tommy? October and I still don't know) tells an adorable story about Dan's first games at Yankee stadium - wmv, 2mbs
The last half inning of the final Marlins game, with the walkoff and on field celebration - wmv, 39mbs. Lots of great moments at the end of this, of course. One of my favorites is the little moment between Scotty and Hanley. They embrace and then Scott holds Hanley an extra couple seconds and says something to him. They seem pretty close, which is something I never thought too much about, besides to occasionally awwww over [Bad username or site: lovingthecubs / @ livejournal.com]' old icon of Hanley comforting Scotty on the mound. I love my super huggy team.

(Have been up all night talking fic with [Bad username or site: offspeed / @ livejournal.com] - how 2005 of us ^_~ That'll learn me to drink a Vault at 11pm.)
It's been TWELVE DAYS. I live in Virginia. My computer only went to Tennessee. It's 2006, not 1917. I don't understand why I don't have my lappy back yet. Granted, counting weekends and holidays, it's been 7 days, which is on the low end of the "7-10 days" I was told. But they never said 7-10 business days >:[

Come on, [Bad username or site: spluckle / @ livejournal.com], help a sister out!

(You'd think that without the added distraction, I'd be more on top of things, but no, I'm more absentminded than ever. Also, what is with gel pens that only last me one class? I don't write THAT much.)

But more important than me and my crash course in life without the internets at my fingertips 24/7 - the fact that the Florida Marlins won yesterday, to reach .500 for the first time since the second day of the season. I wish I were more eloquent, but really XD and ^________^ pretty much express my sentiments on the topic. I heard it said the Marlins are as big a story as the Tigers this year, which sounded weird at first, but I kinda like it :P Not that it will keep Joe in Florida, and maybe this Wild Card thing collapses in the last week like the '05 Indians, but when it's all said and done, I hope they're proud. If not, I'm definitely proud enough for the entire expanded roster at this point.

The LJ Grapevine tells me that [Bad username or site: lovingthecubs / @ livejournal.com] did get to go see the Fish in WI, and Scotty's start to boot. That couldn't have worked out more perfectly ^_^ Also, I'm glad someone who really cared was there. (And you should totally send me a ticket stub if you hung on to any extra ^_~)

(Btw, LJ Grapevine, I've lost my cellphone, so don't waste your text messages.)

Saw on the news this morning that the Crocodile Hunter passed away after getting stung in the heart by a stingray. I hope Joe and the guys can help Hammer through this sad time.
"...but not for him to get hurt. And I still wanted Oakland to win. Why can't everything happen like I want it to?"

The eternal question, as posed by [Bad username or site: rickenbacker / @ livejournal.com].

Okay, obviously this whole situation is funnier if Huston isn't out for the season or something, but yes, Bri and I actually got to see Huston blow a save, live and in person. I totally called it, from the moment the bullpen gate opened. Right down to Sweeney, who hadn't done shit all day, being the one to deliver the big blow. I need to stop doing that. Of course, I'd been on edge since about the second pitch of the game, because you could pretty much smell the impending loss in the air before anyone had even scored. Though that might have been less a sixth sense, and more the fact I had no faith in Esteban. (Who, admittedly, didn't even pitch that poorly.) I've seen both Lidge and Street blow games this year. The baseball gods, they spoil me.

Also, me and Mark Teahen are in a fight.

Redman and Z tomorrow! If I can get Bri to set foot in the ballpark ^_~ She thinks it's her fault the A's streak of wins at Kansas City is over. She is probably right.

[Bad username or site: owllover711 / @ livejournal.com], Doug's hurt, or something? He didn't come out, for warmups so I didn't have much luck getting pics. I didn't get any decent shots of DeJesus either, [Bad username or site: belle1446 / @ livejournal.com], but I'll try again tomorrow.

Rich Harden threw during warm-ups! And something like five balls landed in the stands. I shit you not. Let's all presume overthrowing balls like that was part of his routine >.> Even though he could have easily decapitated some kids. Yep. (That vid's just a few minutes of him doing long tosses. I apologize for the jumpiness of the footage, I got the shakes something awful when he came out during warm-ups; it was fairly weird. I will hate you all if I am developing a thing for Rich Harden.)

Tonight, I feel for y'all that follow both the A's and Boston, my friends.

(By the by, we saw Mulder in OK City. Which was also a shitload of fun; for me anyway ^_~ Despite pitching not so great, it looks like he's coming back into the Cards rotation.)

Fish lost to the Braves today :( But Huddy pitched for Atl, so I can't find it in me to be toooo upset.

-> I'm just gonna confess this one thing, and then we're not gonna talk about it, okay? Okay. Whenever I'm in my car, and that Public Affair song comes on? I totally blast that shit. Yeah. Also, I own that Jessica Simpson cd that had Irresistible on it. And my favorite song on the album wasn't even one of the singles (**coughs** Hot Like Fire **coughs** And yes, I have the opening dialogue memorized). I know. I know. 20 laps. In my defense, I still don't like anything by those Pussycat Dolls people. Hope for me yet?

-> Yesterday, I got my lab order in of The Pool of Tears, Tweedledum, and Mouse's Long & Sad Tale. Today, I got my click and ship notice for that order, lol. Happily, I was able to unload the 5mls of PoT and Tweedledum right away (of course, the day after I placed my order, I got an offer for imps of all three scents, so I'd already tried them and known they weren't keepers by the time my order got here); I shipped those out this morning. Hopefully ML&ST is soon to follow. All the frimps were oils I'd tried, too. But I got a new postcard! Sunnyside ^_~ And there's always my Hungry Ghost Moon order to look forward to.

-> I'm really proud of me; I got on the phone and called some people I hadn't spoken to in months. Well, actually, 'proud' is the wrong word. Because both of them had left me messages over a month or so ago. But I was glad I finally got around to doing it? I hate talking on the phone.

-> LOL, so much for that potentially stellar pitching matchup in Florida tonight. Pettitte showed up, but oh, Josh. He gave up 4 earned in 5 innings, to balloon his era to a completely shameful 2.48. Go to your room, and think about what you've done. It's like 243-0 now, because the bullpen came in and decided to be all "oh, what the hell, runs for EVERYONE!" Don't forget to tip your hostess, Houston. Series split tomorrow? Hope springs eternal. Oh, btw, heads up [Bad username or site: acroarcs / @ livejournal.com]! Marlins' Johnson to chat Tuesday @ 2pm on MLB.com. And this is welcome news: Backe nears return.

-> On the plus side, the A's FINALLY set out their pitching probables for the Baltimore series. Rookie v. Rookie on Monday night, and maybe, maaaaaybe Adam Loewen gets his first freakin' win already? Or maybe the Orioles lose 1-0. Tuesday, Loaiza v. Russ Ortiz and Wednesday, it's Zito v. Benson. Whoo.

And the Cubs won! Yay. I'm thinking, kinda, maybe, sorta, probably not gonna happen, about going to see the Cubs when they come to RFK next weekend. Maybe. I dunno. Damn you, [Bad username or site: lovingthecubs / @ livejournal.com], and [Bad username or site: owllover711 / @ livejournal.com]. I'm all stocked up on heartbreakers and soulcrushers!

-> It warmed my dorky little heart to see Mike Jacobs (far left) has helped lead the Marlins out of obscurity in the NL East captioning a photo in a story about the Marlins playing better than most people expected. Yay, Jake.

Also, [Bad username or site: phantom_hpuff / @ livejournal.com] sent me a sketch! The focus is on Dan and Jake at the railing, inspired by the fact that they are dugout railing buddies, but there's an appearance by Hermida (who cracks me up), and Joe, and a shoutout to the dugout dancers. ♥

!#$%#@$%$@. Also known as good old fashion SQUEEage XD [Bad username or site: rickenbacker / @ livejournal.com] is some kind of miracle worker! I have NO idea how she scored it - I searched high and low for the damn things and I was all over ebay for weeks after they were given out at Dolphins Stadium. It's, like, so ridiculous how happy this makes me XD She is forgiven the whole disgraceful scoreboard defamation of my character. And Cardinals Nation can love on itself ALL IT WANTS, I no longer have anything smartassed to say about it :P

In other news, I also love my f-list for making sure I knew Roy O. had been picked to replace Pedro. I got two email notifications and a text message. You guys crack me up. But I actually had to go to MLB.com to find out Magglio was tapped to replace Ramirez! -2,000 points for the rest of you ^_~

Dontrelle Willis hit a grand slam in the Marlins/Mets game tonight - guess the extra rest suited him. Tomorrow's doubleheader in New York is single admission, and part of me wishes I had stuck with earlier plans to make the trek. But the Philly series is close enough and I've already spent way too much money on these guys, lol. It's a shame Fox is televising the daygame instead of the much more intriguing evening matchup: Josh Johnson versus the Mets golden child Pelfrey.

Random question - you ever hear Rich Harden speak? I stumbled across a postgame clip of him today, having never heard his voice before, and he just doesn't sound at all like I imagined. For one thing, in a clip that was about 1:45, he said "you know" approximately 34 times. That shit was ridiculous. He was throwing "you know"s around as much as I throw around "like", and there's just no excuse for him, cause he's Canadian. They're supposed to be so well-spoken! ^_~ I understand now why he doesn't get as much camera time as some of the other guys (or at least, that he doesn't seem to). I mean, besides the fact that you can only talk to a guy about the fact that he's snakebitten but so many times. His postgame was kinda hard to listen to. It's funny, I was trying to think of why I imagined he'd sound different and it's less that he's Canadian and a bit more that my mental construct of Rich Harden is based almost entirely on Beck's characterization of him, and he tends to come off a bit more mentally ahead of the game in her fics. The kind of guy who isn't inclined to say something out loud until he's thought it out fairly long and hard, you know? :P I was amused, is all.

Grr. I am having MLB.tv related drama, and there is no good ice cream in my house (Neapolitan? Are you serious?) - it would be ruining my night except that I'm wearing my Jake shirt XD

But when he and I met up for breakfast, he gave me a hardback of Runaways, volume 1, (which I'm insanely excited about, btw, because I fell in love with the art in that title ages ago), so it must have been someone else. I'm not gonna ask who, since I guess the fact that you sent it anonymously means you don't want me to know, but thank you so much! It was very sweet of you, and I really appreciate it.

Can't hang around long (**ignores cheers from peanut gallery**); have to gather up my things and get back to VA, but:

The Marlins swept Toronto, bringing their winning streak to 8 games. If Atlanta loses tonight, the Marlins will be out of last place in the NL East. And because I make no sense, I now begin to feel bad for the Braves, even though I'd be thrilled for someone other than the Fish to finish last in the East, and all the Braves have done for the past 8 years is annoy me. **laughs** What can I say. Happy 25, Bri! ^_^ I've spent the past 20 minutes trying to phrase the things I want to say, but I guess I'll settle for letting you know I'm so very glad that we stayed "friends" long enough to discover that we could actually be friends. You have so many good qualities, not the least of which is the fact that few things about me seem to annoy you. I am very grateful to know you, and despite my penchant for situational friendships and falling out of touch, I hope to stay your friend for a long time to come.

(Try not to dwell on the fact that you are halfway to 50.)
I was in a bit of a mood earlier, and the Marlins were losing (guess who wasn't in the starting line-up? ;_;), and the A's were losing, but the Disney Channel saved me. I looooooooooove A Goofy Movie. I don't care who knows it. That movie makes me happy in my soul.

Andrea, G: thank you for the postcards ^_^

++ Carlos Delgado chuckled at any suggestion the Marlins approached the Mets about sending Dontrelle Willis to Flushing for David Wright. Ah, Daylight Savings. The universe empathizes with me for once, and kicks me an hour closer to the first pitch of the 2006 season.

+ I was checking my messages yesterday while I was waiting for a friend at the movies (saw Ice Age 2; enjoyable, but a little too adult at times. The first film was way more subtle in its appeal to multiple age groups) and there was a message from [Bad username or site: nyychick23513 / @ livejournal.com] and [Bad username or site: panicqueen / @ livejournal.com] about Munson making the Astros roster as backup catcher. Y'all are THE BIGGEST DORKS EVER. It amused the hell out of me.

+ The Palm Beach Post has this little '60 Seconds With...' featurette they've been doing all spring. Sixty Seconds with Mike Jacobs & Sixty Seconds with David Eckstein. Just a bit of silliness, really. Hilariously, David Eckstein is a huge pro wrestling fan. They spend their minute with Mikey J asking him about his hair. Btw, his "it ain't no three step process, it's just good hair" makes me even more convinced he's a mutt of some kind. I mean, come on. I've never heard a white person refer to "good hair". Right me if I'm wrong, people. Also, he mentions his mom! He's always talking about his mom. I ♥ him, y'all. I want so badly for him to do well.

+ Nick the Greek made the team; sweet. I look forward to seeing new blood play, though I hear he's not exactly a bucket of laughs. Markakis jerseys, number 61, already dotted the crowd yesterday. <-- lol, what? Nice. Starved for anything remotely positive to cling to with this team? Us?

+ This snippet of an Olney interview with Roy O makes me even more anxious for the April 10 issue of ESPN the Magazine.
