Drove down from MD today and on the radio TPTB were playing excerpts from several different MLK speeches. That was really something to listen to. There was one speech in particular, where he talked about death threats being leveled against his family during the bus boycotts and how he despaired. He recalled praying, one sleepless night over a cup of coffee in his kitchen, for God (well, Jesus) to give him strength to carry on. It was very moving. I hadn't heard that speech before, or many of the others that were played.

Speaking of faith and things that give us strength, and with no disrespect intended, I feel it should be noted that the first few batches of pitchers and catchers will be reporting to ST in exactly one month and counting.

I have decided I will make a 'To Read' pile of about 4-5 leisure books for this semester. Wish me luck.

(Bri came. It was great. I cannot find the USB cord for my camera, so you, and she, are all spared pics. And video of her laughing at Joel Zumaya's inability to field, like the meanie that she is.)

I know, I know, you guys are on the edge of your seat. Will I do NaNo this year? Well, the answer is....

**music builds**

No.

Try to keep it together, guys. For the children.

I seriously have noooooooooo attention span right now, which apparently I should not worry about, because my Yogi teabag label informs me It is not what you have that is your greatness, it is what you can give. Well then. Thanks, Yogi. Good to know I'll always be able to be of service to other people, even if I am not much use to myself.

I wish LJ would stop trying to ram new features I don't give a shit about down my throat. Why don't they try fixing the fact that I can't post or comment without running into some dumb ass error requiring me to do everything twice? Or, here's an idea: re-enable birthday notifications, so I can at least pretend I am not a jackass. Seriously. Someone remind me why I even still have a paid account. Icons aren't really the draw they used to be; I have less fewer than 40 of 111 slots filled as it is.

eta: The Orioles are one of the most dysfunctional franchises going[.] - Mychael Urban, in his column for The Examiner about Barry Bonds.

Thank you, and good night.
Aw, you can see the tiny people gathered around the ballpark for the parade and rally on KMOV's stadium cam.

Anyone need me to top off the glass of Haterade they've been nursing since Friday?

MLB.com says Zito hasn't filed for free agency yet. Jerk. JUST DO IT ALREADY.

eta: Live online coverage of the parade (and presumably the subsequent rally at the stadium?) is here. **ducks**

There was a woman just now holding a sign that said My Husband is a Cubs Fan. Sucks for him! lol, aw.

edit 2: KMOV is also providing coverage.

edit 3: Adam Wainwright was talking about what an amazing experience this has been for him and then he was searching for the words and he goes, "It's all downhill from here." The news guy was like "...Don't say that!" LOL. Oh, Adam. You are SLOW, but I kinda like you.

edit 4: My God. Is there any fanbase in the world more in love with the idea of itself than "Cardinals Nation"? I was rooting for the Cards to win this thing too, but Jesus on a riverboat, shut up already about being "the best fans in baseball." Seriously.
Quick and dirty batch 'til [Bad username or site: rickenbacker / @ livejournal.com] or the one other iconmaker who wasn't rooting for the Tigers makes a set for Cards fans. Also, I confess, I wanted to abuse the grunge textures and the peas fonts.

[Bad username or site: rickenbacker / @ livejournal.com] texted me a little while ago that she was in St. Louis and managed to find somewhere to park her car for $10. I hope she can remember where she left it.

Said she was up on the gate. But no one will scream with her.

It's gonna be a looooong night XD

Is it me, or does Todd Jones have a line for every occasion? Todd, on the new not-quite-a-controversy-but-maybe-getting-there where Zoom's readings on the Busch radar gun were dramatically different from the numbers he was putting up according to the FOX radar gun:

"You talk to somebody, and FOX will tell you [it's] for ratings," Todd Jones said. "You talk to other people and they'll say the Cardinals want to tone the gun down. It just depends on who you want to believe.

"Maybe it was 95 Canadian. I don't know. Maybe it was metric."

He cracks me up. I figure as long as I make no effort whatsoever to learn anything about him, I can enjoy him for a long time. Why is he not blogging anywhere?

Did you notice how Jeter waited until there were official noises that A-Rod was staying a Yankee before he said anything remotely resembling support of Rodriguez? And the best he could manage was "everyone supports all your teammates all the time"? **rolls eyes** Oh, yeah, you're a stand up guy, Cappy.

If Ron Washington isn’t the next A’s manager — and Bob Geren is — expect more grousing from the players eventually. Fair or not, Geren will always be seen in that clubhouse, first and foremost, as Billy Beane’s good friend. And players tend to like being led by folks they believe to have paid some serious dues. Folks like Washington. -
Urban on the A's manager search.

ESPN crawl says Joe's going to broadcast next season (for YES?). Hopefully with a National League Manager of the Year award to his name. I hate Jeffrey Loria.

New ESPN miniseries about the '77 Yankees? And Daniel Sunjata (Take Me Out, Rescue Me) is playing Reggie Jackson? Cool.

Oh what the fuck. Start time is now 10:15pm. UP IN THE FUCKING AIR.

I hate Major League Baseball. I was fucking fine earlier in the day with the idea there would be no baseball and they had to insist they could get the game in tonight. For fuck's sake.

Um. What is going on with Tim McCarver's dye job?

(I'm pretty down about Joe pulling his name out of the running for the Nats job. SADNESS.)

Sorry, Tigers-filk on my f-list. I know some of you are really tired of hearing about this, and you guys live in a world where what happened last night isn't worth talking about, but I wanted to link to this piece from SI, re: the smudge. I found it really informative because, I confess, I don't know much about this stuff. SI talked to a major league bullpen coach (on the condition of anonymity, of course) who says that in his opinion, what we saw on Rogers' hand was pine tar.

Oddly enough, the last part makes me feel better about not getting too worked up over the whole thing (which is sad, I know):

"I don't know Kenny Rogers, but I'm guessing he had to use pine tar because it was so cold. He probably usually uses shaving cream or suntan lotion because they blend in. A lot of guys use shaving cream or suntan lotion, or both, because there's no way you could detect them. But it was so cold in Detroit. You need moisture or sweat to make the shaving cream or suntan lotion work, so it was probably too cold to use shaving cream or suntan lotion.

[SNIP]

I am guessing Rogers didn't really know how to use pine tar, because he put too much on. It probably spread from his glove to the palm of his hand.

[SNIP]

I bet Tony La Russa's pitchers are mad at him for saying anything, because a lot of guys do it, and I'd be surprise if there's a whole staff of guys who don't do it. In fact, I'd say a majority of guys use one of the three -- shaving cream, suntan lotion or pine tar. They can't like him ratting out the other team when everyone does it. Maybe he had to say something because it's the World Series, it's on TV and he probably has to answer to his owner.

But you'll notice he didn't continue to talk about it, and he instructed his guys not to talk about it. They probably have no interest in catching Rogers because if they do then the umpire is looking at everyone."
