"You like to think you're not going anywhere, but you can't ignore all the warning signs," Street said. "I've said again and again, I can't worry about what I can't control."

Street has been hoping to explore a multiyear extension since spring training, and there have been preliminary talks, but nothing since, and he's unsure if that silence indicates anything about possible plans to move him or not.

"I hope it doesn't mean that," he said. "The reason I've been told talks were delayed was because they wanted to see how the season played out with such a young team and if I physically held up after that nerve injury last year. As far as I'm concerned, I'm still interested in pursuing a deal."
- Sf Chron.

**pets him** Sometimes I just want to give him a doggie biscuit. Is that weird?

[Poll #1225808]

Has anyone actually heard anything about a team being interested in Street? Cause I keep reading on sfgate about how he's available, but I get the sense of a resounding "who cares?" coming back from, you know, the rest of major league baseball. I saw one mention about the Tigers, back in May, and that was it. And that was more along the lines of, "Ha! No, the Tigers aren't interested in Huston Street."

[Poll #955533]

Being a nosy ho, I'm rather curious about James Richard's apparent fondness for Mr. Komine. I mean, I doubt he bought puppies for all the rookies at camp. Of course, it's possible Rich ran over Shane's dog or something, and Bailey was given to him to make up for that, but I hope not. It seems Shane is of Japanese ancestry. And Rich does have that Japan fixation. Maybe the puppy is in exchange for following Shane around all spring commenting on what a beautiful day it is, and/or dragging him to every sushi place in Arizona.

What's the over/under, do you figure, on whether Rich stutters as much in Japanese as he does speaking English? ;)

I wish it were tomorrow.

Also, I wish I could sleep! I think I asked this before, but if anyone has recs for over the counter sleep aids, please share.

Admittedly, the options presented in the below poll are but a fraction of the different looks we've seen from both guys. But: pointless pollage for ppl who pay any mind to the a's )

+ Randomly came across the STL Post-Dispatch wondering What's wrong with '24'? Glad to have even more reassurance that I'm not missing anything.

+ I got an email from the Death Cab fanclub folks that Ben Gibbard is going on a solo tour in May (OMFGYAY!), and that presale tickets go on sale on Monday (WHOO). But that's it! No word on locations, AT ALL. What the hell? Why make people spend the next four days all excited about the possibility of seeing Ben, only to find out come Monday that he's not playing anywhere near them? That's like the Daily Double of obnoxious.

+ Things I Don't Get: Revocable trusts as a will substitute, for one, and for two, why the British government is releasing so much information on deployment plans for Prince Harry. How does that do anything but make him a target for insurgents? I've heard Basra, a tank regiment, and May or June. Even if it's false information, doesn't that just put other British soldiers at risk? Boggles my mind.

+ Albert Pujols shaved his head, but it's about 2 years too late to stop people wondering about his age.

+ There's this article on MLB.com and Zimmer's all "BACK OFF JETER, PEOPLE" and it made me laugh. Zim, you aren't even on the Yankees payroll anymore, shut up. I cackle with glee that there's a sense that Jeter's being made out to be the villain in the story of why DJ and A-Rod don't heart each other anymore.

Okay, back to work >.>
[Poll #851594]

Yeah, the options are ticky boxes because quite frankly, I can't decide how I feel about it from one minute to the next.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd...I give you some stuff from The Brushback's archives, because they're funny )

And with the Series going back to St. Louis, and given Cliff Floyd's recent comments, this one from October of last year - Adorable Cardinals Fans Actually Think They’re Intimidating.
“Those fans are a lot of fun. I wish I could play here,” said pitcher Roy Oswalt. “It seems like every one of them is a cute little old lady or an adorable little kid. Sometimes when I’m playing somewhere like Philly, I get batteries thrown at me. Nobody in St Louis throws batteries at you—except for that one time when I was sitting in the bullpen and I announced that my iPod was out of batteries, and somebody threw me a couple to help me out. That was nice, especially since they went through the trouble of enclosing them in a soft, knitted cover so they wouldn’t hurt my hands when I caught them.”

Good morning! No game last night, stupid weather, so I watched The Nine. I liked it. uberquick, unspoilery reaction )

At some point, Moose became a complete non-factor in my fandom life, which is kinda weird after 8 years of him being the answer to the secret security question on every account I own, but after [livejournal.com profile] offspeed posted a quote from the pre-game conference, I had to go find the video. It's vintage bitchy snarky Moose. It amuses me when he starts an answer off with "Obviously...", because the implication is that the writer's a fucking idiot to have asked the question. You can stream the video on the YES website, or, if you have too much self-respect for that, I ripped the vid - (wmv,20mbs) // (asf,20mbs). Great moment at -1:57 when a guy is asking him about the Detroit lineup. The asf is skippable, the wmv is not.

(Shame, btw, that MLB.com doesn't carry the pregame conferences since they carry the postgame conferences. But anyway.)

Guantanamo teach-in today, and then class at 2pm. Which will interfere tremendously with my ability to watch the game, but I'ma tape it so I guess I'll survive. Was Zito on Cold Pizza yesterday? I thought I saw something to that effect on the ESPN ticker in the morning, but I forgot to set the vcr before class.

Quick poll, which is way overdue:
[Poll #837494]
eta:: Huston, on getting whacked by a foul ball yesterday ~
"(Scott) Sauerbeck would appreciate it," Street said, referring to the Oakland reliever who did not make the Division Series roster. "His whole deal is 'man-tosterone.' That's a word he created. He says guys with man-tosterone don't move when the baseball's hit into the bullpen. Guys who don't have enough man-tosterone scatter. I was trying to raise my level of man-tosterone. It was foolish. The more intelligent thing would be to move."

Street did the same thing in Colorado during interleague play and got hit in the head, but in fairness, Sauerbeck didn't join the A's until July, so the first one is Street's fault alone.

"Ninety-nine percent of the time, nobody gets hit," he lamented. "I've been hit twice now."
- Street gets save after foolishness. LOL. Oh, Huston. I don't even know where to begin.

Chavvy on BDSSP - 09/01/2005 (asf)

Obviously, my favorite part is the shout out to Munce. Followed by his being fairly upfront about The Sermon On The Bus and the team's trouble with off-field distractions.

Today's WWIAF is hilarious to me.

For all who are wondering, yes, it's still raining. It stops for a few minutes, and then it starts up again. I sincerely apologize for not being more sympathetic to all the New Englanders who were bemoaning the bad rainfall they had earlier in the year.

Marlins see edge in ipod. I'm rather surprised this is something clubs are just now realizing they can do.

DeepDiscountDvd's semiannual 20% off sale started yesterday. One of the discount codes that will work is USATODAY, and as ever, everything ships free. Like, even if you just buy Dead Again for $4, HINT HINT. (It is my mission in life to see to it that everyone owns this movie.) I'm probably not getting much since I still have things from last time I haven't finished watching. For due South fans, I note that the third season of the re-packaged episodes is available for just over $15. I think as of right now, I'm gonna wait until Tuesday, so I can order the 3rd and 4th season of Dead Zone (both priced at about $15 each), and I'll also get the Dr. Katz set, since it's $11. I never got around to buying Alien Nation back in January, so I'll get that now ($28). I'm on the fence about getting the White Sox World Series boxset ($38), mostly because I don't really care to keep any of the World Series games; I'd just be interested in the discs with the final ALDS and ALCS games. (Actually, if you'd be interested in splitting the boxset with me, lemme know. You could have the boxset case, if you want it. Though I might want to keep Brandon's great game, maybe? Hmm. But we can talk that out.)

Oh, Branagh's Henry V is $7. Okay, getting that too, because I only own it on video. BUT THAT'S IT. Sadly, the Deadwood & BSG sets are still too pricy for my tastes.

Listening to the Yanks/A's game and Michael Kay is describing Chavvy's injury and **shudders**. Poor dear.

Oh! My dad just announced he's going to Egypt on Monday, for work. But only for a month, which is...meh. **laughs** 'Cause that's not enough time for me to put together a visit! But maybe it'll work out and once he's been back once, he won't be so resistent to the idea of going back in the future. We'll see.

eta: Btw, I'd like to thank Mark Mulder for picking up the slack created by Brad Lidge and Huston Street deciding not to suck so much anymore. I wasn't sure what I was gonna do with myself for awhile there. You don't suppose Mr. Hakuna Matata's got free agency year anxiety, do you? Or maybe second thoughts about that whole engagement thing plague his every waking moment ^_~

You know, Olsen has pitched to Bonds tonight. So I was pretty glad when intentionally walking Cabrera came back to to bite Matt Morris and co in the ass. Here's to hoping the baby fishlets hold on. Mikey J hit a home run ^_^

In other news, the slightly expanded version of the beaning poll is interesting: Apparently, more players would want to see Albert Pujols beaned than Derek Jeter. Or Carl Everett. Or Curt Schilling. Or Roger Clemens, for that matter. Um. What? (For the record, Curt Schilling had been my guess for the 5th slot on the list.) How does David Ortiz rank anywhere in the top 10? Weirdness.

This also from SI:
Red Sox shortstop Alex Gonzalez was booed in the third inning of Wednesday night's game against the Yankees when the Fenway Park PA announcer accidentally introduced him as "Alex Rodriguez."

Hee, it's rather a Pavlovian response at this point.

Brad Lidge, and the Marlins. Conspiring to take years off of my fucking life.
Dunkin Donuts discontinued the Orange-Mango Coolatta. I went to order it today, as I was gearing up for a busy day of studiously not working on my Note. I went to order and the guy goes, "The mango coolatta's discontinued. It's the Tropicana Coolatta now."

Me: "Whaa?"

"Oh, it's the same thing," he assures me. "Just a different name."

Only, you know what? It's not the same thing, my friends. It's way more orange-y and not at all mango-y. I am frustrated at every turn.

Anyway.

Favorite song from an animated Disney film? I confess to way over-identifying with Reflection when I was in high school, but if I had to pick one and only one? Probably Baloo's The Bear Necessities.

ETA: I think it probably doesn't count, but I also very much like He Lives In You. It's on the soundtrack to The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, but I didn't really become a fan of it until I was listening to the soundtrack for the Broadway version of The Lion King, where it also appears. I tend to associate it more with the Broadway show than the animated sequel.

So Kirby Puckett died. Which is sad to me as he was only 45. But I don't really know much about him and I never saw him play (I moved here in the summer of '94 and didn't really start following baseball half-seriously until a couple years later). People seem to be taking it hard though, and that's sad too.

Apparently Richard Hidalgo hasn't shown up to camp. What the hell is wrong with professional major league ballplayers all at once? Someone needs to get to regulating. It's your damn job, people. Wtf.

I started Memoirs of a Geisha today! I was very proud of me. I'm gonna go read until 24 comes on, ignoring my mother, who is bitching that I am no daughter of hers because I am not in the mood to go social visiting this evening. I hate, hate, hate when she just drops shit like that on me. You can't just announce to me that we're gonna go see somebody. Someone save my sanity - what's that song from the early 90s, there's a line about sending a postcard, and a cat, and in the video the guy's got that long shaggy hair that guys wore in the '90s? I think maybe the girl had left him to go out west or they had both gone out west and life wasn't what they were expecting.

Yeah, I know that's not helpful. But if I could remember more of the lyrics I would have googled it already :-P

That's not to say, however, that the Orioles won't listen to Tejada offers if another club is seriously interested. Intriguing names mentioned included Astros Roy Oswalt and Brad Lidge -- from SI's truth & rumors

Helloooo, nurse. I would be on that like white on rice. How much longer is Oswalt signed for? :-P And nice job landing Patterson, gang. 'Cause the last struggling outfielder we grabbed from the Cubs worked out so well. See, Miggy? Told you we were committed to contention.
