I'm crossposting for now. But I will definitely purchase a paid account come April 30. And I'm considering turning the DW journal into my main one once Open Beta finishes, but I have no idea if it'll really come to that.
I know what you mean. I'm taking a wait and see approach, because I don't know what I want to do with an account there, for sure, but all the possibility is kind of exciting.
I'm sort of in the dark about the whole dreamwidth thing (I mean, I get it, it just came out of nowhere), but I have a feeling I'll want something to throw myself into once school's over, which incidentally is 5/1.
**laughs** It's an LJ clone++, I guess I'd say. Like InsaneJournal and JournalFen, it's based off the LJ code, but TPTB over at DW are making an effort to improve the usability of the code and do different things with it (some of TPTB are former LJ staffers). I think it's fair to say the site is bidding for LJ users who are disenchanted with the user-management dynamic here, and the perceived efforts to "myspace"acize LJ.
I'm on a mailing list so I'll get a code then. I want them to succeed but I'm not interested in moving. I see they've already managed the first management kerfluffle. Could not pay me enough to run an LJ type site.
Dreamwidth [...] is going to give paid users Google Analytics as a feature. This means that paid users will be able to know who in DW is linking to them, leading to some interesting changes from the way things used to be. I think this has the potential to surprise and upset people.
For instance, let's say you link to someone's post in a friends only post in your journal or use to link to their journal in a locked post. Some of your access given subscribers click on that link, and if the user you linked to is paid and using Google Analytics, they'll know you were talking about them in a post they don't have access to, and if you linked to a specific post, they'll know which post you're talking about. Stealth talking about people has become that much harder and unreliable. Link (http://dreamwidth-meta.dreamwidth.org/393.html).
I'm not really interested in starting another journal (why subject more people to my drivel :-P), but I would still be interested in an invite to create a journal there if you guys are moving -- so I can follow you if that is okay with you. :-)
I can't speak for Bri, but I haven't seen her express any interest in Dreamwidth, so you're prolly safe there.
Although I have a DW, I haven't decided what to do with it. I mean, I can say for sure that it will not be a clone of this journal. But beyond that, I'm not sure how I'll use it: whether I'll post there semi-regularly, or use it as a commenting-only journal. (Right now, I'm leaning towards commenting-only.)
