Sorry, Tigers-filk on my f-list. I know some of you are really tired of hearing about this, and you guys live in a world where what happened last night isn't worth talking about, but I wanted to link to this piece from SI, re: the smudge. I found it really informative because, I confess, I don't know much about this stuff. SI talked to a major league bullpen coach (on the condition of anonymity, of course) who says that in his opinion, what we saw on Rogers' hand was pine tar.

Oddly enough, the last part makes me feel better about not getting too worked up over the whole thing (which is sad, I know):

"I don't know Kenny Rogers, but I'm guessing he had to use pine tar because it was so cold. He probably usually uses shaving cream or suntan lotion because they blend in. A lot of guys use shaving cream or suntan lotion, or both, because there's no way you could detect them. But it was so cold in Detroit. You need moisture or sweat to make the shaving cream or suntan lotion work, so it was probably too cold to use shaving cream or suntan lotion.

[SNIP]

I am guessing Rogers didn't really know how to use pine tar, because he put too much on. It probably spread from his glove to the palm of his hand.

[SNIP]

I bet Tony La Russa's pitchers are mad at him for saying anything, because a lot of guys do it, and I'd be surprise if there's a whole staff of guys who don't do it. In fact, I'd say a majority of guys use one of the three -- shaving cream, suntan lotion or pine tar. They can't like him ratting out the other team when everyone does it. Maybe he had to say something because it's the World Series, it's on TV and he probably has to answer to his owner.

But you'll notice he didn't continue to talk about it, and he instructed his guys not to talk about it. They probably have no interest in catching Rogers because if they do then the umpire is looking at everyone."

Actually, it's being talked about pretty extensively here (http://motownsports.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43414). And on the WorldCrossing forums, too.

Well, good. I was getting the impression people wanted to stick their heads in the ground about it, what with all the carrying on about how the media is out to get Detroit.

It's being talked about, but I think the majority doesn't believe it's as big an issue as certain people are trying to make it out to be.

If you mean me, given that I do complain a lot about the media, I do just seem to notice that there isn't a lot of positive stuff being said about us in any sport. Sorry for being protective of my team, I guess. It's my opinion.

If this isn't about me, of course, then ignore me. XD

Alex has been dealing with some bandwagon Cards fans that we refer to as Certain People. Because we are very mature like that.

Gotcha. Just checking. I can be oversensitive and I know this, but I do know that I talk a lot about how the national media disrespects Detroit. Because frankly, in my opinion, they do. Heh.

I confess, I personally have felt the Tigers have gotten a lot of positive play since kicking A's ass, what with many essentially crowning them the Champs once the ALCS was over, so I don't really see the hullabaloo about the smudge on Rogers' hand as disrespect of the whole team, but apparently your Tiger agrees with you (http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20061023&content_id=1721909&vkey=ps2006news&fext=.jsp&c_id=det).

Oh, I should have clarified. My bad. I just meant in general. Turn on a Pistons game that's on national TV and the announcers will be talking about coaching problems rather than the success in the backfield; turn on a Red Wings game and they'll be talking about the overreliance on European "finesse" players rather than solid "hitters". Lately, you are absolutely right, after the ALCS the Tigers have looked better than usual. Just I mean ... Detroit too often gets treated as a laughingstock, when really, our only truly shitty sports team is the Lions. You know?

No, lately, though, I absolutely agree, the team's come out smelling like a rose in most situations. Although Brandon makes his case well. Still mad at Rolen, yup. XD
