In the continuing theme of me being old as hell, I actually fell asleep during the 8th inning of the All Star Game. Or whenever it was they were trying to get everybody to vote David Wright for MVP by shoving his father down our throats. And then I woke up as the AL was welcoming Michael Young back into the dugout. Whoops. Better luck next year, Senior Circuit. It would also be great if the game actually started at 8, and FOX did their pregame crap at 7:30. Thanks.

Am I the only one who thinks Soriano could have come into a home a little harder earlier in the game? I know he's skinny as hell, but he practically tried to stroll in there. Are you guys trying to break a 9 year bad streak or aren't you?

Brad Penny striking out the side to open the game was cool and all, but it's not as cool as Moose striking out McGwire and Sosa on six fastballs, with runners on second and third, in the '99 All Star Game. For the record.

I dislike in-game ceremonies, and I'm not sure why Major League Baseball thinks they're so swell. I thought the ceremony itself was pretty short and sweet, but breaking up the flow of the game like that?

I used to get upset when guys were invited to the All Star Game and didn't get to play, but with the whole home field advantage on the line now, I understand guys being preserved in case the game goes extras or a situation arises where they'd be needed late. I believe the guys when they say that even if they don't play, being named and getting to be in that environment for 2 days is still pretty satisfying. I can't remember what year it was when Bordy was named to the All Star team and only got to pitch hit, in an at bat that wasn't even televised because Fox was late coming back from the commercial break. I was totally pissed off on his behalf, but he seemed genuinely just happy to have gotten a chance to go.

On the sunny side:
+ We finally get one of those human interest backstory pieces on Josh Johnson.
+ Office-UK stars to guest on Office-US. How awesome is that gonna be? Pretty freakin' awesome.
+ New York's Leading Men - another of those great stories on the left side of the Mets infield. [Bad username or site: phantom_hpuff / @ livejournal.com] linked me to this, and a couple other all star break pieces on the guys, but this is the best one.

On the not sure how I feel about this side:
+ TBS joins MLB TV lineup - TBS is gonna be cutting back on its national Braves coverage over the next few years (shock! horror!) and apparently will get some early postseason games, and a few Sunday Night Baseball games. I think FOX absolutely has to carry BOTH the NLCS and the ALCS; now that I've spent over a month with a woman who doesn't believe in it, it is inconceivable to me that people without cable should not get to see baseball's semi-finals. Especially when, if you ask me, the LCS in recent years have been tremendously more entertaining than the actual World Series.

The Oakland A's can feel free to announce their post-break rotation ANY minute now. I can only take off for one of next week's games, damn it. Also, I coulda sworn I saw something in the paper a couple of days ago about Chavvy maybe going on the DL? Maybe I should just hold out to see them in Kansas City :/

Deep breaths, you guys. It's the second half ^_~

eta: Manny may have torn cartilage in knee. Well, that's unfortunate.

LOL. Oh, Fox. Just...what? You had FOREVER to work on that pregame setup, you guys.

eta: "A Mark Wahlberg fastball. Catch me if you can."

Oh, Tim. That was supposed to be a Leonardo DiCaprio reference, right?

[Poll #766713]

Bri, did you record the Derby? MLB.com doesn't have it archived, and Ang missed the shot of Dazed&Confused!Grady ^_~

Because, because: mlb.com's clippage of guys watching their teammates in the derby.

Uggla watches Cabrera. And there's Danny's brother! Aww. (asf) // (wmv)
Jose watches David. (wmv) // (asf)
Utley watches Ryan. (wmv) // (asf)

I liked it better last year, when they didn't have the cameras right in the guy's face, but still cute.

J'adore Dan Uggla. Reason 119. Reason 119a. DOOFUS. Reason 120: He bought a video camera for the All Star Game festivities, and then returned it because he heard Wilson Sporting Goods would give him a free one. "I'm still cheap, man," he said with a laugh. Man after my own heart.

23 first time All Stars on the NL and AL rosters. And they're just so adorable about the whole experience.

Richard Justice explains why Garner's in the right for not pulling an Ozzie. Random line that caught my eye though: If someone this smart can't get Brad Lidge fixed, then Brad Lidge probably can't be fixed. Oh, Richard Justice. That's not necessary! Oh, and Roy O on his frustrating first half.

Dear God, Barry Zito looks godawful in the AL jersey. Granted, I think most everyone looked hideous, because both the NL and AL jerseys are a special kind of ew, but Barry looked especially awful. Also, he needs a haircut. (And so begins the era of Barry Zito Can't Do Anything Right and I Already Hate Him.)

Greeny was just telling this story about being on an elevator with Phil Garner and Ozzie Guillen yesterday, and Ozzie was talking to him a million miles a minute in Spanish in one ear, and Phil Garner, with his slow drawl, was trying to introduce Greeny to his wife at the same time. Greeny's Phil Garner impression is hiiii-larious.

Liriano gets All Star nod, after all. After Glavine bowed out, I wondered what Contreras would do. I'm very, very happy Liriano will be there...though I couldn't pick the guy out of a line-up. It's embarassing that it's taken up until today for the baseball machine to finagle him onto the roster, but the point is he's going, so yay. Still rooting for the NL, though.

I totally Jeter fist-pumped in the car when they said it on the radio. It's really a miracle I haven't run my car off the road listening to sports radio when I drive.

Also, there was this great thing where the news dude is talking about all these planned renovations for RFK, and how thousand of tickets in the upper deck will be slashed to $3 and $5. He pauses a beat and then he goes, "winning? would also help." I just about died laughing.

Other things that are awesome: The webcast of the Derby tonight! The woman I'm living with doesn't believe in cable (HEATHEN) so I wouldn't have been able to watch otherwise. So yay, internets.

Also, all that talk in the comments of the earlier post about the STL/HOU rivalry was pretty interesting reading. So thanks for that :P

Noooooooooooooo. Reyes won't play in the All Star Game. David Eckstein is going as his replacement.

"I'm disappointed," Reyes said before the Mets' 7-6 victory over Florida on Sunday. "I'm not going to play, but I'm still going." Aww.

Also, people who feel bad for Lidge when he sucks it up: if there's a reason besides your being an Astros fan, Bri would like to know.

Local news keeps doing this thing, whenever they talk about the 5 US soldiers accused of raping an Iraqi girl/woman (I've heard that she was 15, which makes her a girl to me, but different reports keep refering to her as 'iraqi woman') and then killing her and her entire family, local news keeps doing this thing where they wrap up the story by saying something along the lines of "the accused soliders are part of the same unit that had two members kidnapped and killed by insurgents last year." Like...oh, well that makes all the difference! Guess I won't lose any sleep over it tonight. I swear, they don't do that for any other crimes they report. It's not like they're reporting on the guy who attacked and crippled a man on the Baltimore National Pike and then going "It is believed the suspect was routinely beaten by his father as a child." Sometimes I hate people.

/ talking about stuff that is not sports-related.

Bri wants to know why no one cares about Jason Isringhausen and his 7 blown saves this year. Which, for those who are counting, is actually more blown saves than one Brad Lidge. He's also got 4 losses, which is 1 more loss than Lidge. Buuut he's saved 4 more games and his era is two runs lower, so. Yeah. Also, Lidge looks like he might shatter into a thousand pieces at any moment and Izzy just doesn't. Also he's a Cardinal. So, no, NO SYMPATHY, BRI.

I gotta say I'm really enjoying the development of the HOU/STL rivalry. It's as much fun for me as NYY/BOS used to be before I got worn down by all of FOX & ESPN's hype and hullabaloo. I wouldn't have thought it was possible, I used to eat Sox/Yanks up, but it's gotten to the point where I'm not so much interested in who outplays the other; if I watch at all anymore, it's just in case there's a throwdown.

The debate on Mike & Mike this morning, which I missed some of, because the DC affiliate that carries ESPN programming has apparently decided to go with a local sports call-in show instead of M&M (BOOOO), was about whether there should be a consequence to an uninjured player opting out of the All Star Game when he has been voted in by the fans as a starter. Dickie Vitale was calling for any such player to miss a week of regular season games, which sounds ridiculous even to me, and I might be in favor of some kind of public shaming for players who blow this thing off. I mean, a player can bean a guy in the head and not miss a week of regular season games, so let's not get crazy. The blase attitude some guys take to this thing really bugs me as a voting fan. But at the same time, I don't want a guy there who doesn't want to be there anyway, so I'm not sure you want to use the threat of punishment to force a guy to attend. Just let someone else go. There's always a list of snubs as long as my arm, so it's not like you're ever gonna be lacking for a deserving replacement. Rip a guy in the papers and on the air for not going, fine by me. But I don't know that there should be regular season consequences for a guy not going, because then you're just gonna make a guy be there who probably won't even try.

I'm not gonna lie, I didn't even realize Manny Ramirez *hadn't* played in the All Star Game the past couple of years, so I wonder if this is much ado about nothing. Golic says you could print on the all star ballot itself Manny Ramirez will not attend the All Star Game if voted in and Manny would still get a ridiculous number of votes, and I think he's right. I cast a few votes for himself this year, and now that this pattern of him blowing it off has been pointed out to me, I won't vote for him in the future, but I doubt most people care. Do you?
