+ There seem to be a couple big fans on my f-list, so I figured I'd ask... In my time, I've heard maybe three Decemberists songs in their entirety. I didn't care for The Soldiering Life but I really, really like Red Right Ankle and Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect. So, as much as that tells you anything, can you rec me some other songs by them to check out?

+ I can't find my cellphone charger, so I haven't turned it on in ages, but I managed to get it working long enough yesterday to check messages, and besides a couple messages from my parents, there were two messages from my friend Liz.

Message 1: Hello! I'm just calling to wish you a happy holiday! I thought it would be better if I called than sending you an e-card written in Arabic that I didn't understand. So I hope that you are celebrating by reading some nice sports porn or some such thing....

Message 2: See once you get me started calling, it's really hard to get me to stop. It's Liz, it is...Friday night? Whatever. I'm all by myself at the Arundel Mills Muvico Egyptian whatever? The Jillian's movie theatre. I'm going to see Capote by myself. I'm figuring I'm probably gonna be the only one in the theatre. ...You know how at the Muvico you buy your ticket and there's the little space where you walk and then you go to the ushers? So, right above the door to get into the place where they take your ticket, is a huge poster for The Gay Cowboy Movie. And I really - it warms my heart and I wanted to tell somebody about it and I figured that you would appreciate it, so I'm telling you. I hope that it warms your heart as much as it warms mine. I don't know if it's because Jarhead is opening this weekend so they want to get the Jake Gyllenhaal crowd? But anyway, prime advertising position. And there is a gigantic floor display for RENT right behind it....

Liz, I know I don't tell you near enough, but I love you a million Swedish fish ^_~

+ And speaking of messages from my friends, I came back from being away from my comp, to find [Bad username or site: johnnybvo / @ livejournal.com] gripping about having been scarred for life when he stumbled across Duck Tales slash. (Don't ask me, I have no idea.) The content of which he felt the need to SHARE WITH ME and so I am now scarred for life. Because, clearly, that's what friends are for :-P

+ Tackling big projects on my plate has proven completely and totally unpossible. Going with clearing off the little stuff (cleaning my room, doing laundry, dropping off mail) and then maybe, MAYBE I'll be in the right place to get some honest work done.

Holy crap. Duck Tales slash? Are you kidding me? That was, like, my very favorite show when I was a kid. I'm curious... and yet that is so very wrong on so very many levels. Though I really shouldn't be surprised. I think my first encounter with smutty fanfiction was a Smurfs orgy story that I found in like eighth grade.

Also, yay for gay cowboy movies! I'm thinking I definitely need to get a poster of that eventually. :D

Oh how I wish.

...

You poor, poor thing.

I think the worst part is, he started telling me about it and before I could say "Dude, I really don't want to know," he mentioned the story was noncon. WHY IS THAT NECESSARY? IT WAS A CARTOON. ABOUT DUCKS.

Also, yay for gay cowboy movies! I'm thinking I definitely need to get a poster of that eventually. :D

Me too! I really like the way the poster was composed. Also, how is it I don't have a single BM icon yet?

You poor, poor thing.

Yeah. It was about Smurfette being the only girl. And I think it was illustrated. Needless to say, not much surprises me anymore. :D

Also, how is it I don't have a single BM icon yet?

This is where I got mine! (http://www.livejournal.com/users/everlyn/6405.html#cutid1) I also had another link, but I can't seem to find it. I'm pretty sure it was somewhere at [livejournal.com profile] green_queen's journal, if that helps. Ooh! HERE IT IS! (http://www.livejournal.com/users/green_queen/329270.html#cutid1)

From: [identity profile] ayrdaomei.livejournal.com

Oh, thanks for the linkage! I started to make one for myself when the trailer finally dropped, but then I got distracted by other shiny things. LOL @ "Is it gay cowboy month yet?"

From: [identity profile] lisabird.livejournal.com

You're quite welcome! I snagged that one as well. :D

The mere idea that there is such a thing as Duck Tales slash scares me!!! =/
But I can't help wonder who was the first person who actually went there and wrote it.. =P

LOL, I know right? And not only wrote it, but put it on the internet for all to see. What is wrong with people? **re-bleaches brain**

The Decemberists are weird like that, for me--I think some of their songs are great, but it's by no means a sure thing.

I do like this one, though. It's from the same CD as "Red Right Ankle"--it's called "The Gymnast, High Above The Ground". (http://s54.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0TNA49SRY67Q63QS1SUDUBFL9R)

sniff!

Glad you got the messages ;) i can't believe you transcribed them. i'm all warm and fuzzy over here. seriously though, the poster was huge. it was awesome. (...and, was that a What a Girl Wants, reference? You know me so well.

Also, i heart the decemberists. my friend amy and i went to see them in october, and they ended with this great cover of "Mr. Blue Sky," by ELO (the song from the Eternal Sunshine trailer, which if you could find, would be great.

My favoritest of Decemberists songs: from their first record, "Leslie Anne Levine" and "July, July." California One Youth and Beauty Brigade is good too if you go for the epic song cycle thing (I often find myself listening to that record at work and sort of tuning it out until all of a sudden here comes the end and I'm like, yes! I WILL join the Youth and Beauty Brigade"); "Los Angeles I'm Yours" from their second record is good too, especially for the way the lead singer sells the whole pseudo british thing (they're from portland, OR) by saying "Los AngelEEs"; and, from the most recent record I think the "engine driver" song might be a better bet. i can't remember the names of the other songs i like on that record, though "we both go down together" was a fan favorite at the show. Which was awesome. Awesomer even than a huge gay cowboy poster. Seriously, it was a great show.

Another vote for "Los Angelees." I don't know that many of their songs, but I love that one.

Re: sniff!

and, was that a What a Girl Wants, reference? You know me so well.

Really, it's sad how many times a week I try to make reference to that movie :-P

Also, i heart the decemberists.

I remember! I think Red Right Ankle was on that list of recs you gave me at that Egg-named place we went once ^_^

Oh, I like the ELO version, and man alive, I love mp3 blogs. A google search unearthed this: Decemberists - Mr Blue Sky (http://www.everythingnotrelated.com/coversalbum/The%20B-Sides/Mr.%20Blue%20Sky%20(ELO).mp3). I'll dig around for a better copy though; sounds fun ^_^

Thanks for the recs!

Duck Tales slash? I mean.... Duck Tales slash?? How does that appeal to someone on, uh, any level? I mean, cartoons. And, uh, ducks. Slash? Eep.

I know. I know. I know. To paraphrase Jayne...slashing animated ducks? When'd that get fun? There was also some uncalled for business involving the Beagle Boys that I'm not even gonna say anything more about because I consider you a pal.

You've gotten a lot of good Decemberists recs already. The ones I'd recommend to you from each album are -

From Castaways and Cutouts, I'd go with "July, July," "Grace Cathedral Hill," and "California One/Youth and Beauty Brigade."

From Her Majesty, the Decemberists, I'd recommend "The Gymnast, High Above the Ground," "Bachelor and the Bride," possibly "Song for Myla Goldberg," and "I Was Meant For The Stage." (Overall, this album is my favorite.)

From Picaresque, I'd rec "We Both Go Down Together," "Eli, The Barrow Boy" (I think you'll really like that one), "Engine Driver" (tied for my favorite Decemberists song), and possibly "Sixteen Military Wives."
