Off to College Alone, Shadowed by Mental Illness. (bugmenot, if you need a login). Nothing particularly earthshattering in that piece, but what the halibut. Particular focus on bipolar kids, but if you've got an f-list on Livejournal with more than 10 people on it, a lot of that article probably sounds familiar. Or maybe I just run in certain circles? ^_~ At any rate, it's the most emailed story of the day so far, which says something.

The minor controversy over Ian McEwan being accused of plagarism has led to some prominent writers coming out to voice their support of him. Interesting piece on that here:

In the statements the authors cheerfully admitted to plundering other work — historical writing, autobiography, primary-source documents, other novels — for their own books, and said that such research was the lifeblood of any novel that depended on period detail.

Heh. That 'cheerfully admitted' kills me.

Republic of Tea's holiday Winter Fruit Blend, you have been judged and found lacking. Especially irksome because I asked for a small pot of tea and got a large >:[

The girl a table behind me isn't feeling God when she goes to worship services. She doesn't know if it's because the worship services have it all wrong, or if she does. Heady stuff, Pip. Don't you have exams next week?

eta: and now the one girl is expressing her inner conflict over the church's teachings on homosexuals because she's never really had any homosexual friends but the few homosexuals she knows now are "just...really nice." And she likes being with them because there's "no judgment" and she doesn't understand that if homosexuals are such horrible people, why she should feel so good when she's around them. And a friend of hers has reminded her she's to love the sinner and hate the sin, but she just thinks that's kinda patronizing. Aw. Undergrads.

And thank goodness, they're leaving, because I was never gonna get any work done. It was like having a deleted scene from Waking Life acted out in front of me. Well, behind me. As I eavesdrop on it. But you know what I mean.

edit 2: I kinda love when really old dudes refer to their wives as "my bride."
