+ World Trade Center trailer. If you don't want to download, you can stream it (here). I ended up making the decision not to see United 93, didn't think I would be able to handle it in a theatre full of people, but I look forward to WTC, I think. For one, WTC features a cast of recognizable faces, as opposed to United 93's cast of unknowns, so I should be better able to realize at all times that what I'm watching is a movie. Not just Nic Cage, but Maria Bello and Maggie Gyllenhaal. There's the locksmith, from Crash, whose name I should learn, apparently. The other port authority officers are all familiar faces - guys who have been playing New Yawkers on tv for ages. And second, I believe both Port Authority officers depicted in this film worked alongside the creators of the movie, so I feel like it'll be more directly drawn from their actual experiences on 9/11. Which is not to say United 93 pulled its depiction of what happened out of the air, but at the end of the day, it just didn't sit so comfortably with me, how much of the interaction and exchanges in that film the creators must have extrapolated based on what little evidence they had of how things went down. And I'm not gonna lie, I had no real interest in sitting in a theatre, watching extremists threaten a planeful of innocent people for 2 hours. I really enjoyed Munich but I don't think I've ever been as uncomfortable in a movie theatre as I was during the first 15 or so minutes, which depicted Black September's assault on the Jewish athletes.

I don't think I could go see WTC if the story had been about the two firefighters who were found dead, locked in an embrace. But it's about two Port Authority officers who survived, and that's a story I want to see, and hear.

The WTC trailer reminds me a lot of the Pearl Harbor trailer, which I thought was beautifully striking. The shot of the young boys playing baseball looking up at the sky to see the Japanese bombers got the same reaction out of me as the Port Authority officer looking up from the tourist's map at the sound of a plane flying over.

+ If you don't have the MLB All Access Sound 2003 dvd, Bri ripped and uploaded the footage of the ride-along with Zito.

+ I fell asleep on all my ballgames yesterday! Which is fine, as it turned out, since almost none of them ended happily for my boys. Missed the NYY comeback, which looked pretty cool, though I'm not inclined to rewatch the entire broadcast. But I do love that about baseball, the dramatic comeback, even when it's the Yankees.

Speaking of rewatching broadcasts, I was watching Haren's start, and saw Scott Erickson come out of the bullpen for the Yanks. Creeeeepy. And the Yankees announcers were wistfully remarking how strange it was to see the number 46 on a right hander, and I ALMOST felt bad for them, but then they should know that feeling, because it weirded me out when Towers wore 35, and it still weirds me out every time Cabrera rolls out in number 35, so yeah, guys, that's how the rest of us feel when you seduce away our franchise faces.

Also, they went on this little tangent where they started counting how many guys on the field in that inning had been on People's 50 Most Beautiful list, and carrying on about the Yankees being the best looking team in baseball, at which point - with apologies to the Oakland hitters - I had to skip ahead to the next inning.

+ In other news, since I'm all caught up on The Office-US, I decided to download the last 10 eps of Supernatural. I think I might also finally crack the seal on season one of Veronica Mars. Whoo new fandom.

I've read like 10 pages of Three Nights in August in the past week :P At this rate, I'll be finishing it up in August.

Yeah there's no way I'm going to see United 93. I never saw Pearl Harbour either 'cos I figured I'd have trouble. Hell, I had trouble with Air Force One.

Well, at least you're reading it!

Yeah there's no way I'm going to see United 93.

I think I will see it, eventually - just not in theatres. I want to be able to stop the movie if I need to, and that's better accomplished in my own home. I almost bought Flight 93 today, which was a made-for-tv movie telling proposing to tell the story of what happened "based on information in the public record" but I ended up putting it back on the shelf.

I never saw Pearl Harbour either 'cos I figured I'd have trouble.

I liked Pearl Harbor well enough, I think because of the fact that it focused pretty tightly on the three main characters so I remained tied emotionally to them, while realizing at all times that they weren't real people, you know? But I definitely, definitely cried a whole lot. I'm glad I saw it though, since I knew next to nothing about what happened on December 7th. I'd still recommend the film though, for those days when you need a good cry.

Hell, I had trouble with Air Force One.

Omg, I know what you mean. Well, sort of. Air Force One is hands down one of my favorite movies of all time, I saw it six or seven times in the theatre, and every time I watch it, the takeover of the plane freezes my heart. The smoke, the screams, that moment when the Secret Service burst into the meeting room to whisk the president away, Mitchell's daughter seeing the agent shot right in front of her.... Man alive. I remember being so shocked, the first time I watched it, at how strong a kick in the gut that sequence is.

Well, at least you're reading it!

Hee, yes. One step at a time! :P

That snippet gave me goosebumps. I really want to see both movies, but haven't had time or energy to do so..

I can understand that - I don't think Pearl Harbor is the kind of film you can just pop in the vcr when you have a free couple of hours. You have to, like, prepare yourself. I know it will be the same with WTC.

Thanks for the heads up on WTC...I don't usually watch movies about tragedies I remember, so United 93 is a definite no. But I might check this one out from what you've said about it. We'll see.

Also, they went on this little tangent where they started counting how many guys on the field in that inning had been on People's 50 Most Beautiful list, and carrying on about the Yankees being the best looking team in baseball, at which point with apologies to the Oakland hitters, I had to skip ahead to the next inning.

*laughs* I don't blame you.

I don't usually watch movies about tragedies I remember, so United 93 is a definite no.

It really depends for me, on the factors I mentioned above, and how the story ultimately turns out for the characters the film focuses on. I mean, I remembered Somalia, but I saw Black Hawk Down in the cinemas, I own it on dvd, and I'd recommend it to anyone. Sure, I got emotional, but it made all the difference in the world to me that it was largely based the recollections and accounts of people who had been there, and that, in the end, I knew some of the guys I was watching would make it out alive. Hotel Rwanda is another example. Basically, I'm just a big wimp, and I need to know that things will turn out alright in the end, for some of these people I've come to know, or I can't handle the movie >.>

The Pearl Harbor trailer was simply amazing. It makes me lose my breath everytime I see those two boys playing baseball when the Japanese bommers fly.

I decided to download the last 10 eps of Supernatural. I think I might also finally crack the seal on season one of Veronica Mars.

I haven't yet managed to watch the second half of season 1 of Supernatural but everyone on my flist seems to be taken over the moon by it. So I for one hope it lives up to its hype. *lol* Only a month until break is here and I get to indulge myself. =P

And as for Veronica Mars, I'm totally obsessed with that one so I can only recommend it! ;)

The Pearl Harbor trailer was simply amazing.

Definitely. I can still remember the first time I saw it, and the way I felt, and that's not something I can say about most trailers.

but everyone on my flist seems to be taken over the moon by it.

I've noticed that on my f-list, too! Which is really what made me decided to get off my ass and get caught up. Supernatural really seems to have exploded in the second half of the season, and I hope that's because the show got noticably better. As opposed to, I don't know, just a lot of people discovering the show at the same time :P

Supernatural did get noticably better in the second half of the season, because Kim Manners from The X-Files joined the team.

From: [identity profile] ayrdaomei.livejournal.com

Oh, that's great to hear! Early on in its run I felt that it would be one of those shows that was never as fully realized on screen as it would be in fandom. The addition of Kim Manners to the crew gives me hope ^_^

I think you're on to something. United 93 is unappealing to me, because it's about these innocent people who died. WTC is about people who lived. I guess even cynical old [livejournal.com profile] wickedgoddess_ is looking for a happy ending this time around.

WooHoo Veronica Mars!!

WooHoo Veronica Mars!!

**laughs** Hopefully! I ended up spending much of today reading, so I've put off the first couple of eps until tomorrow. I'm kind of excited about sitting down to it, now ^_^

From: [identity profile] rickenbacker.livejournal.com

ok, i had to ask. why is your mom nagging on you about your HiC?

From: [identity profile] ayrdaomei.livejournal.com

Because she lives to bug me about stuff I spend money on, honestly. She was all, it cost too much (the packs of 10 were on sale, 3 packages of 10 for $5, but that's "too much"), the juice has too many calories (law school anxieties dropped me to below 130 for the first time in ages, and she has appointed herself guardian of my new weight), she bought me expensive juice (cranberry and grapefruit) and I went and bought this, and so on, and so forth :P

Welcome (hopefully) to the Veronica Mars fandom. I promise we don't bite. Just a warning, the show really doesn't take off until around episode 4; though the flashbacks/b-plot are about 50 times better than the A-plot of that episode.

(And, the guy who plays Iceman in X-Men has a twin brother who shows up for a few episodes. He's really cute)

I'm still not sure about WTC. I'll have to check out the trailer when I have more time.

Thanks for the heads up on V-Mars; I usually give a show about 4 or 5 eps to hook me, but sometimes I get impatient (Numb3rs much?). It's good to know ahead of time that it might take a little while ^_^
