Not much to say. Today was a good day. I wore my
F THE YANKS: BOSTON 2003 shirt, and I put a bit of masking tape over the
3 and replaced it with a
4 ;)
Professor Kirgis began Civ Pro by announcing that there must be a God (the class exploded into laughter and applause, with one loud boo that was overwhelmed). Apparently, he's a Cubs fan, and can now have hope for his team. After putting a hypo up on the board to quiz us on the discovery reading, Kirgis proceeded to call on a young man in a Yankees hat, and instantly solidified his standing as my favorite professor here by asking him, oh so casually: "Now...who's your daddy?"
He did call on someone in a Sox hat afterwards, so he didn't just pick on the Yankee fans today ;)
Holy hannah, Edmonds just made an incredible catch.
Anywhoo, needless to say I wasn't playing much attention in classes today. Apparently the game ended too late for any of the national editions of the
Times or the
Post to get the Sox win in, which made me sad, because I would have loved to have a copy for keeps. I did the next best thing though, and spent much of class reading stories online. This hereby becomes my longest post ever, because it's my favorite quotes from everything I've read today ;) It'll go in memories, just so I can have a pick-me-up close at hand next time I'm feeling low. Bob Ryan said this was a story that was just too good for words, but I think it's been done justice all around.
During the 8th inning, Fox showed a clip from a sit down with Johnny Damon. He was asked about his lowest/worst moment in baseball: "I would have to say losing the ALCS last year. You know, we were so close...that game you could never forget, we were real close...and then the Yankees came back. That's what they do. That's why they've been a great team all these years. That's why there's a little more extra incentive for us this year. We don't want that feeling again."
From Ortiz: "We saw a lot of fans crying and feeling hurt and I think myself and all of my teammates, we were worried about it and kept that for ourselves. And that's one of the big reasons for us to come to the field and represent the way we did the last four games."
( It is redemption, resilience, retribution, and resurgence all wrapped into one unforgettable moment. )( Several paragraphs from a great, great column in the Times which speculates a bit on the psychology of the 'Yankee Mercenaries' and how they ended up as they did. I think this was my favorite of everything I read today. )( The beauty of time and baseball and why October is the most important month of the year )( Javier Vazquez, whom the Yankees wanted more than Schilling, had nothing, and the Yankees were never in the game, not for a New York minute... )( Eric Wilbur's game blogs make for a fun time. No other article reported that Sox fans were demanding McCarver's head on a stick last night )( Just a little moment )( The 2004 Yankees are poster boys for unprecedented failure. )( Yankee fans awake to world turned upside down )( Dent got a huge cheer from the crowd of 56,129, but the gesture smacked of desperation by a team desperate not to be on the wrong side of postseason lore. )( Nope, not a dream. )In other news:
- Talked to my dad on the phone. I told him I didn't watch 95% of the game (I followed it online) for fear of jinxing the boys, and he laughed and said "I was stupid too, I didn't want to watch it because I didn't want to jinx. When I turned on the tv it was 6-1 and I said, nah, that's still too close. So I turned it off. And then when I came back a little later it was 8-1, and I said, okay, we've got this."
At which point I laughed, because he said "we", and because I hadn't been confident enough in my jinxing abilities being thwarted until the 9th inning (I did risk taping this game though, and have watched it since ^_^). But still, the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.
- Went with [Bad username or site: choplewey / @ livejournal.com] to the Patrick Henry. Bought my Ron shirt, and a Donnie Darko shirt, because, why not, at this point. Good times were had. She bought Wicked, which (ha) I totally plan on bumming from her at some point. She made me laugh on the way back when she yay'd about having a book to read before going to bed and then confided that she was so glad she could express her dorkiness freely around me.
Speaking of dorkiness, Clemens is batting right now. The sight still amuses.
