First off - Bri swears it wasn't her, so many thanks to the kind soul who gifted me additional paid time. I originally had gifted paid time through March (which I feel like I've wasted by only posting twice, but posting aside, it gave me the chance to futz with some potential new layouts), so whoever you are, I hope you like baseball, cause I now have paid time through the first two months of the baseball season ;) While I'm not yet feeling bitten by the MLB bug, odds are you'll be drowning in pointless polls and constant updates by next month ;)

Music: I've been really digging Our December by Thriving Ivory, a free Amazon mp3 I downloaded last fall and have just given a listen. I like the song so much I went and bought their major label debut which is currently at the top of Billboard's Heatseekers chart and only $7.99 at Best Buy. Of course, Our December isn't on their major label debut, and I don't like any song on there near as much. Let this be a lesson to you, kids. Never pay for music until you've scouted it out for free, first. I'm sure the cd will grow on me, with time. I like the band's sound, it's just that lyrics-wise, the major label debut is kinda boring.

And on the topic of new music - you can stream new Death Cab tracks over at Stereogum. I don't like Little Bribes or A Diamond and A Tether much...My Mirror Speaks and Once I Was A Loyal Lover are fun times, though!

- [Bad username or site: johnnybvo / @ livejournal.com] and I talked about our immediate impressions of the inaugural on Tuesday afternoon, and then I came across this: the NYT gathered speechwriters from several past administrations to critique President Obama's inaugural. If you're interested in the use of language and perspectives on the same, it's a good read.

- When President Barack Obama was sworn in on Tuesday, he was surrounded by an extended clan that would have shocked past generations of Americans and instantly redrew the image of a first family for future ones....The family that produced Barack and Michelle Obama is black and white and Asian, Christian, Muslim and Jewish. They speak English; Indonesian; French; Cantonese; German; Hebrew; African languages including Swahili, Luo and Igbo; and even a few phrases of Gullah, the Creole dialect of the South Carolina Lowcountry.

I love that this is the most emailed story on NYT.com: The Nation’s Many Faces in Extended First Family.

- Is anyone watching the new season of 24? I need someone to !!!@#&&&&???? with, however belatedly, over the nopenotdeadness of Tony Almeida.

Admittedly, the options presented in the below poll are but a fraction of the different looks we've seen from both guys. But: pointless pollage for ppl who pay any mind to the a's )

+ Randomly came across the STL Post-Dispatch wondering What's wrong with '24'? Glad to have even more reassurance that I'm not missing anything.

+ I got an email from the Death Cab fanclub folks that Ben Gibbard is going on a solo tour in May (OMFGYAY!), and that presale tickets go on sale on Monday (WHOO). But that's it! No word on locations, AT ALL. What the hell? Why make people spend the next four days all excited about the possibility of seeing Ben, only to find out come Monday that he's not playing anywhere near them? That's like the Daily Double of obnoxious.

+ Things I Don't Get: Revocable trusts as a will substitute, for one, and for two, why the British government is releasing so much information on deployment plans for Prince Harry. How does that do anything but make him a target for insurgents? I've heard Basra, a tank regiment, and May or June. Even if it's false information, doesn't that just put other British soldiers at risk? Boggles my mind.

+ Albert Pujols shaved his head, but it's about 2 years too late to stop people wondering about his age.

+ There's this article on MLB.com and Zimmer's all "BACK OFF JETER, PEOPLE" and it made me laugh. Zim, you aren't even on the Yankees payroll anymore, shut up. I cackle with glee that there's a sense that Jeter's being made out to be the villain in the story of why DJ and A-Rod don't heart each other anymore.

Okay, back to work >.>

SI listed the best games of 2006 and a handful of baseball games made the cut. NOT the terrifically fun OAK-LAD 17 inning matchup, incredibly, but that 12 hour marathon game between the Sox and Yanks, as well as a couple of last season's 18 inning NL games are on the list. And of course NYY's crazy comeback against the Rangers. NLCS Game 7 was the only postseason game to rank. The baby fish were also featured, courtesy of Anibal's no hitter :) Still, Huston did not blow a single one of those games, so that list is hella lacking and fundamentally flawed. (There was one Brad Lidge blown save, though. ♥)

EW ranked BSG the third best drama on television this past year, behind only The Wire and Friday Night Lights. And, damn, I've known for a couple years now that I should be watching The Wire, but I guess [Bad username or site: acroarcs / @ livejournal.com] really is onto something with FNL. TV Guide ranked BSG #1 and FNL #2, and The Wire didn't even make their top 10 or honorable mentions. But Deadwood did. ♥. 24 and The Office made both lists - validation, yay. BSG, The Office, The Wire, Heroes, FNL, and 24 also all made AFI's list of ten best '06 shows.

Of course, the AFI voted Happy Feet and Little Miss Sunshine onto their list of the ten best films of '06, so. You can't win 'em all.

God, I love baseball - I dreamt last night that the A's traded Bobby to the Brewers (what?) and that the Mets announced they were pulling out of the Zito clusterfuck. Woke up to the news that the Rangers have given Barry Zito an ultimatum. They want a response on their contract offer by this weekend. That seems like a bad move on the Rangers' part, considering that the Yankees allegedly want to jump into the mix, provided they can unload Randy Johnson soon. It's one thing for the Mets to say this is our offer and we're not gonna change it. It's another for the RANGERS to be trying to get all mafioso and shit. I mean, I understand their not wanting to be used...but they are the TEXAS FUCKING RANGERS. What did they think they were being pulled into this thing for? They are like the Orioles, but with an owner who writes blank checks. Supposedly if Zito doesn't accept the ~$102M/six year offer, they're pulling it off the table. Hee. Good. Because it was just gonna be embarrassing when he signed with the Mets for a shitload less. And I love how the GM said their offer will change considerably if Zito doesn't sign now. Because obviously, if he wasn't going to sign with you for $100M, he could always realize the error of his ways in a couple weeks and sign with you for WAY LESS. Morons. It took them this long to figure out Boras was using them to try and drive up the asking price? Sure, over$$$$ worked with A-Rod, but I guess they think everyone missed how that has played out for him in the long run.

I read elsewhere that Mark's decision is down to the Rangers and the Cards (ahahaha! THANK YOU FOR FUCKING OFF, ARIZONA) which I hope against hope is a nobrainer for him, no matter how much the Rangers offered him. Come on, Markus. You've got a lovely wife, with a good name. Impossibly long legs and the tiniest hips in all of sports. Great hair. A World Series ring. Memories of a sun-drenched honeymoon to last you til the divorce a lifetime, and probably a pair of twin little Markuses on the way. Playing for the Texas Rangers does not complete this picture. Well, unless they guaranteed you two years at 20 million or something.

eta: Interesting. Bet at least half of those names leak in the next year. So that should be fun times.
Reviewing for Sales, and I have the second season of 24 on in the background, just as white noise for the most part (there's a marathon on WGN).

You know in the 8AM hour, where Jack's avoiding CTU's calls but finally picks up when they have Palmer's office contact him? Dennis Haysbert and Kiefer Sutherland are really quite good there. I mean, they're always good but I just love the dynamic between their characters. Both Jack and David are proud men and I'm just such a huge fan of the way they relate to each other in the language of strong/proud men. No wasted words, everything meaning exactly what it seems to. When Jack, despite himself, agrees to go into CTU, I am never quite sure how much of it is patriotic duty and how much of it is his personal respect for David Palmer. I suspect it's more of the latter than the former and I just love that, because not too many people have an influence on Jack at all.

Last season, I remember being a little taken aback by the fact that Jack cried when the news broke that President Palmer had been assassinated. I thought it was absolutely the right call by the writers (or was it Kiefer's call, I wonder?) but that it felt right didn't take away from how stunning it was to see Jack moved to tears by the death of someone who wasn't family. It suggested such an unconsidered depth of feeling.

Um, basically the whole point of this post is that I love the relationship between those two. It's not quite G'Kar-Mollari, Pembleton-Bayliss, or Jed-Leo, but for something developed over the course of a handful of scenes together, most of those in the form of split screen phone conversations, I'll always be impressed. Do they ever even see each other again face-to-face after the first season? I try to compare it to something like the Tony-Jack dynamic and even after everything they've been through together, I somehow feel like Tony-Jack doesn't come anywhere close to the richness of Palmer-Bauer. And I love that I can still get excited and into gen relationships, because [Bad username or site: johnnybvo / @ livejournal.com] says I slash things indiscriminately ^_~

(Also, I forgot how irritating it is when people don't listen to Jack. You call him in, you cry about how much you need his help, and then you jump in his face and ask him if he's losing it when he starts doing what you brought him in to do? Ugh. But the way the writers ended up turning me around on Mason by the end of the next hour is pretty amazing.)
Typed reaction as I was watching. Because I don't do coherent, not really. And who does when it comes to this show?

24 - Day 5 - 9:00AM to 11:00AM )

Ah, and my downloads of Boondocks and The L Word are finally done. I guess they'll have to keep. [Bad username or site: cruzalicious / @ livejournal.com], last night left you speechless? Is that a bad thing or a good thing? :-P

Wow, the actress who plays Sun on Lost? Looks absolutely gorgeous at the GGs. Awww. And yay, Felicity.
24 - Day 5 - 7:00AM to 9:00AM )

**coughs** Um, sorry about earlier. Obviously, the sun does not rise and fall on me getting my seasonal dose of Kiefer Sutherland :-P

Dear Panthers & Bears,

It is 7:57. 24 is supposed to start in 3 minutes. Please hurry up and one of you win so that you may go on to lose to Seattle next week. Or something. I don't know and I don't care, just please get off my television and stop fucking with the return of Jack Bauer.

The L Word - 3x01 - Labia Majora )

Also, talk about your delayed reactions: I was futzing with a new wallpaper between classes today (tada! I'm easily amused. What can I say.) and I JUST GOT hmm. this might prove to be a problem, considering all the bending zito does on a daily basis.

Hahahaha. I'm a little slow special that way.

I realized earlier that I hadn't watched the prequel for the new season of 24 yet. It just finished downloading, so I think I might do that Friday or so, get myself psyched up for Sunday. Or more psyched up, rather. With all the new promo spots Fox has put out, I reached 'psyched' about two weeks ago :-P
And they can kiss my ass with their twists and their promises. Fuckers. Though, okay, I kinda love how Marwan is five steps ahead of everyone, still.

Ahem. How about some music?

Right click and save as, please )

And speaking of saying goodbye to favorite characters...I just realized that Jacob Carter died several weeks ago. A belated salute to the old man; I always liked that character and Carmen was fun to watch. Thank goodness Bra'tac is still around...right?

I'm just gonna sit here in denial for an hour.

The 24 writers are dead to me.

.... )

But in other news, there were quite a few shots tonight that look like they'll make good screencaps which in turn should make for fun icon bases. So there's that.
Finally got around to catching up on flist stuff I missed over spring break. I am, once again, completely floored by people with flists in the hundreds. Even skipping posts takes energy, you know?

Anyhoo, snurched linkage:
via [Bad username or site: catch22girl / @ livejournal.com]: '24' addicts see their lives ticking away in real time. I was amused by the observation that "in almost every episode, some agent rips the electric cord from a table lamp [and] with one casual jerk, jams the live cord into the chest of a terrorist." Heh. Well, not every episode ^_~

via [Bad username or site: brooklinegirl / @ livejournal.com]: Last December, Stuffo placed an ad on Craig's List, inquiring into hiring the A-Team. The article documents the range of responses their post received. Hi-fucking-larious because predictably, some people did not get it. Funniest thing I've seen online in a while. It made me laugh really hard, which is not the best thing when there is crazy phlegm action going on in one's throat...

And just randomly: Motivation posters, comics style

I was so excited when I did an improptu search to see if Becket was going to be released on dvd anytime soon and came up with this. Unfortunately, I did some more digging about and it looks like they picked that date out of their ass, because there's been no official new word on the re-release since it didn't happen last year. Grr. Wtf? It makes no sense for A Lion In Winter to be on DVD, while there's no word about Becket. So annoyed. But R&GAD in TWO days! And apparently the dvd release of Cinderella got pushed up from the original 2007 release date to October of this year. I have no idea when that happened, but that's awesome.

I still haven't watched last week's Deadwood. I should do that. (And I should probably watch the last several eps of BSG sometime in the near future.)

just a bit of music )

How awesome is the Jack Jack Attack short on The Incredibles dvd extras? I love Kari to bits. At the end there, where she's just worn out? **laughs** Poor thing. The Brad Bird & John Walker commentary track was also a lot of fun.

This shot of the pews at the wedding amuses muchly )

And Dash's laugh when he realizes he can run on water remains one of the most perfect things in the world.
Oh man, can I get some tortilla chips to go with all the queso 24 heaped on me this hour? Xe, I can't believe you abandoned me, dude. Good times were to be had.

Also, because no, I couldn't wait til the ep was over )

Apropos of nothing, everyone should go see Bride and Prejudice (because you haven't lived til you've seen Sayid bust a move, kids) and rent The Station Agent.

One of my icons has been nom'd at [Bad username or site: alias_awards / @ livejournal.com] (yes, the knowledge of this resulted in much dorking on my part), I've seen the new Sin City trailer like 20 times, The Incredibles is out on dvd, and I got free soup at the Java Cafe yesterday. Woot ^_^

They're out to kill me with this PSA with Kiefer. That was great. Please be advised, your Muslim American neighbors are not plotting your death and the end of the American way of life. K? Thnx. Bye. Thanks, Kief, cause Lord knows I was getting tired of the suspicious looks. Now I want a similiar PSA about how all black women are not conniving evil bitcas.

24 - 4x08 - Spoilers! )

Hot Topic has a new Hufflepuff tee! (Because no, it's not possible to have too many Hufflepuff t-shirts.)

Because I love you, and I'd want you to do it for me...I give you that damn song from the new Ipod commercials: The Caesars - Jerk It Out
ayrdaomei: ([24] I like that idea better)

Man, tonight's 24 is really the kind of episode that makes me wish I made some sort of effort to stay spoiler-free.

That was about 20x more fun than even a ClaudiaBlack-afied ep of SG-1. Again, I kick myself for giving up on S3.

'24' spoiler that is of the yay )

Watching the F4 teaser trailer, I really wish I knew, like, ANYTHING about F4 canon. Because I just need a reason to slash Ioan's Reed and Julian's Dr. Doom ^_~ Swallowing my residual bitterness about the casting of Alba, it looks like it will be fun. Can't wait to see more of the effects on Johnny.

It's supposed to snow this afternoon. It's snowing! To which I say, FINALLY.
